Does anyone else skip things when they are reading?

I do.

whenever the book starts to get boring i just skip a couple of pages until there is some more action.

there is still a whole chapter in HP4 and 5 which i have never read cause it is just so boring.

also in many books that have letters or articles in them i often skip cause i know if it is important it will come up again later. eg the really long biography on Albus Dumbledore in the 6th book.

my sisiter thinks this is wrong and she has to read every single word in the book.

What do you think? is skipping OK?

Sure skipping is OK, if you think the book is otherwise good.

I skim, but if I find myself skimming more than I'm reading, I put the book away and go on to another.

It does depend on the book though- the ones I skim or skip in are the ones that seem to have a lot of tangents that aren't really germane to the story as a whole.

There are some books that I do skip... not the first time around though. I read the books cover to cover and the only times I skip are for very desperate circumstances like when there's a characters pov which has absolutely NOTHING to do with the storyline and completely messes up the story because of their boring useless perspective, than I skip. But that's only in two books.

Usually the books put in such info for a reason, but sometimes the boring stuff slips through the cracks that has no reason being in the story, at all. But what you're describing, I consider those parts terribly important to the storyline. I'd say it's not ok but others would say what I do is not ok either. In the end it's what you're ok with and whatever it is that makes you keep wanting to read.

Just don't come back asking questions because you're confused later. Dumbledore's biography includes key information to understand his character arc.

If a book bores me so much that I want to skip passages, I simply stop reading it. Nay, my tendancy is to reread sections as I go...and then to reread books within a year or two.

Ironically, it was the second time through the Harry Potter series that I was most attentive in my reading. Then knowing the resolution, it was fun to follow the clues that Rowling had set up. Reading them altogether also gave an appreciation for JKR's writing, which improved delightfully through the series.

99% of the time I don't do that. I mean maybe for the kind of potboiler books you pick up at the airport to kill time during a layover.

I was sorely tempted to do so when I read Les Miserables though. Man that book digresses.

Yup. I also skip words in scentences sometimes, and have to reread. It's fine to skip, but be sure not to miss important stuff, lol.

  • Its a personal choice. Sure its ok, but you may find you dont get the full effect of the book - but hay at least you read it!

That is a lot to skip, you risk missing a lot and the author's work goes unappreciated but if it works for you...

If it's really boring i skim, but i never really skip that much...

    How's my writing(plz read)?
