german shepard owners?

I have an 8 month old german shepard I just got a couple days ago, He is really sweet and very friendly but he sure has a lot of energy! He has had obedience training but you really have to get onto him for him to listen to you. He doesn't bother anything in the house but he is constantly running around and back and forth and he follows every step I make. Is he still young enough for this to be the puppy in him or could it be that's he is going to be a hyper dog? Thanks for any info

Update:

he gets plenty exercise, we live on 5 acres and he runs as much as he wants but as soon as he's back in the house he is still wound up. I've had several german shepards before and i love the way he stays with me, i'm just wondering if he will be hyper or grow out of it. my others weren't quite that high energy

He is a puppy and he won't "grow" out of it for about 2 more years. He is a herding breed so he is programed to be alert and ready to go at a second's notice. Even though he has had puppy obedience he needs to continue regular obedience training either formally or informally for the rest of his life. German shepherds are smart and they need to have something to do or they will find things to do and cause trouble. He is doing his best to bond with you and figure out if you are the pack leader. Take him with you whenever you can and insist that he use his manners all the time. If you don't have a crate, get one. He is not too old to be crated for "naps" and when you just want a little distance to get your own stuff done. Be sure you are letting him know that it is his job to mind his own business if you tell him to go to bed or lie down somewhere make sure he does it. He is really going to get worse about not listening to you and pushing the envelope for about the next year as he becomes an adolescent. If he is not neutered yet do it soon.

i don't very own one yet i've got had reviews with German Shepherds on the animal look after the place I volunteer. What are the grooming needs on your German Shepherd and do they shed all 12 months long? -on the look after, the groomer would brush and comb the GSD two times a week so as that the double coat is properly-groomed and controlled. One could do away with wooly hairs from the undercoat besides because of the fact the outer coarse look after coat. And particular, some German Shepherds shed all 12 months long or have a laying off season. How lots workout does your German Shepherd desire? -Being an lively canines, the German Shepherd canines demands a severe point of workout. It likes to run around and play in the outdoor. German Shepherd canines additionally likes to pass on a useful long, walk. Is your German Shepard playful? -they are so playful. there became this one GSD on the look after that often had to play. yet at times, they could be lazy. although, they are playful canines. How lots own interest does your German Shepard desire / choose from you as an proprietor? - they are customary as velcro canines and could consistently be there for you. that's the reason they have saved extra than a number of lives recently. what's the right trait, or function approximately your German Shepherd or the breed? - they are only so clever. They learn so speedy and may be certainly housbroken. what's the worst trait, or function approximately your German Shepherd or the breed? - German Shepherd as domestic dogs would be somewhat naughty. in view that they are youthful, they don't understand any extra advantageous. as long as you acquire it from a great breeder, your super. would you advise a German Shepard to a diverse experienced canines proprietor? - relies upon on the owner if he/she has the main suitable wisdom. stable luck!

German Shepherd Dogs needs lots of exercise and stimulation.

If your yard is fenced, you can throw a ball or tug for him, asking him to sit and wait until you throw it. Have him lie down and stay, walk around, then give a release word (any word) and throw it. You can reinforce his obedience training and work off his excess energy at the same time.

A lot of people have "velcro" GSDs- they want to be wherever their people are. This isn't a bad thing. He does sound like he needs more exercise, and keep reinforcing his training. Once you've had him for few more days and get to know him better, start taking him for walks. It's good for any dog to be out and exposed to people, sounds, etc.

    Good luck.

add: He will most likely become calmer as he matures- but that might not happen until age 2 or later. Plus, he's only been in your home a few days--he needs more time to adjust and relax.

We have had 3 litter of white shepard pups since march. They are a breed with a lot of energy. They also get very attached to their owners/companions. My male follows me everywhere I go. Giving him toy that make him think or work such as the treat toys. Ones you stuff treats into... made by kong so they are indistructable. They challange the dog which also help satisify the work craving. Training them to sent train or agailty train can also help work the mind if normal walking does not tire him. They usually don't start to calm down till about 3yrs. Very high energy dogs but very loyal. Feel free to ask any more questions.

You have a GSD, that is the very reason they call them velcro dogs. I can't even go to the bathroom without my 2 shepherds following me. Get used to it. Yes they do have a lot of energy but him running around and back and forth (on patrol) and being under foot is something you need to get used to. That's the German Shepherd Breed. Sorry, but I personally love it.

You do NOT have a "German shepard".

You have NOT had "several german shepards".

There is no such thing as a "German shepard" or a "german shepard".

    [Smith] take notice, too

Why don't either of you take notice of the red lines Yahoo puts under your errors?

Having been torn away from what he knew, and having had only 2 days to get to know you, of COURSE he:

    (1) has trouble understanding your commands

    (2) wants to keep an eye on the one thing that links him to his previous home.

GSDs do the second thing anyway; it is bred into them to feel responsible for their owner's sheep and property and safety. Once they work out their owner's patterns they adapt to it. It's years since I taught any of my dogs to lie down - I don't need them to lie down outside, and inside they copied their elders and so as soon as I sit down they automatically find somewhere to lie.

As soon as your new dog trusts you you should do an 8-weeks course in a training club, to polish your technique and to make yourself more consistent & thus easier for your dog to understand.

I also get the feeling that you don't know the first law of training:

"A dog does what it does because it WANTS to."

Which means that you need to find ways to make your dog love doing what you tell him to do. The usual way is praise with a simultaneous reward - pats/rubs, a game, a tidbit.

    [Pal]:

Why would anyone WANT "a little distance" from their dog? Mine know that they are not allowed in my bedroom, not allowed on the furniture; but otherwise they have the run of the house, so choose sleeping spots such as under the bathroom hand-basin, under my office desk, or in the axis of the passageway where they see 5 doors and 3 more door frames.

I do not approve of CLOSED crates, except during travel. But most GSDs are intelligent enough to find somewhere that allows them to feel they are in a nest-cave so no enemy can sneak up behind them while they're asleep.

And geez, [Smith] - 3 litters in 6 months! Practising to be a puppy miller, are you?

My German Shepherd that we got after our great pyrenees passed away was so super hyper, and she was 11 months it is not because he has puppy energy it is because they are very active dogs unfortunately Sasha jumped the fence and hasn't come home in a week

    He is still a puppy

you just have to put your foot down & let him know whose boss he'll eventually grow out of it
