Bye Bye Miss American Pie....?

..the day the music died.

I know every word to this song, and I understand what each bit is about. But, I can't remember WHO Don McClean (sp?) was talking about? or WHAT? or was it just the whole scenario that he sang about? I thought it was about ONE person who died.......?

Update:

"?"...I believe you are right. And the more I think about it, it WAS that plane crash and the death of all of them!

Update 2:

Wow...what great answers. And a real walk down memory lane! You're right Dave V... and Brent, I have to agree. It is one of my all time favorites. I was just tellng my son last night that this song is a piece of history. I knew the answer but my brain got a little "rusty". Thanks to all of you!!!

thats actually one of my favorite songs.

and my history teacher actually taught us about it.

on february 3rd 1959, Buddy holly, ritchie Valens, and the big bopper were killed in a plane crash after a concert

and don mclean was a paper boy when it happened and he found out about his death when he opened up his stack of papers for the morning.

so feb 3rd, 1959 was the day the music died

The track is approximately the deaths of Buddy Holly, Richie Valens, and the Big Bopper in a 1959 airplane crash after a live performance. That date is more commonly known as "the day the track died" considering all 3 musicians had been very standard on the time. If you pay attention to the lyrics, I've continuously interpreted the track to be Don Maclean's response to the tragedy. I suppose him because the little boy within the track with the paper course offering newspapers with the headline approximately the crash.
