How many years of college does it usually take to become a Psychiatrist?
I need to know how many years it normally takes to become a Psychiatrist, and also which field the undergraduate degree would be in. I live in the U.S. (not sure if Country location might affect the answer)

On average it takes 12 years, longer if you want to become more specialized. Psychiatrists are more medical whereas psychologists do more of the therapy. As you probably know, psychiatrists are licensed to dispense medication and even in some cases, do minor surgery. Because of this, you will be required to go to medical school after completing a bachelors degree. I would recommend pre-med with a minor in psychology if you can fit it in for your undergraduate. After medical school, you will then do your psychiatry residency, which averages for years.
If you are more interested in the therapy side of it, I would suggest becoming a psychologist. Or, having had experience of my sister going to therapy, if you can become licensed as a psychologist/therapist AND a psychiatrist you can make a lot of money. There were only two people who had both qualifications in our area and they were always booked.
