Question about African violets?

I have kept them on & off for many years. When I buy them, they are in full bloom. but then the flowers die off, & I can't ever get them to re-flower. What would cause this?

Here is one of many sites that address care of African violets.

We have always had good luck keeping our violets in a bright window on the north side of the house. That keeps the light level up but doesn't let the sun burn the leaves. Remember the original wild version of these plants grew on the forest floor where there was vey little direct sunlight.

you are relay serious about raising them here are some tricks that i have leaned over the years.fist and fore most don not water them from the top the root base will rot off in just a few days and they will die .if you fertilize thy em use (fish poop)they sell it in the garden dept worm casting work well also don't laugh at me it is there.

if you don't mind using commercial fertilizer.osmacote time released fertilizer also works well .the light thing is easy you can buy you cheap fluorescent light fixture and put about 12 to 14 in. above the plants turn it on at the rate of about 6 hrs a day three or four times a week one more thing if you repot these little beggers they are most likely going to die but if you do don't put them in a pot much bigger than the one they came in .you see that is why they bloom in the first place they have run out of room and they bloom to try to reproduce the only problem is the ones we in our homes are sterile them wil not germinate .oh i almost forget put a rust nail on two in the pots with them them love the Iron oxide that the nail gives off as it rust .just push it down in the dirt around the roots of plant it wont hurt it hope that this helps you ray smith minden louisana raptor bird of pray

Read all the above answers for good suggestions first. Finally, after your first flush of bloom, snap off the bottom layer of leaves. You will notice that the stem is lots lighter than the ones above it. That should leave you three tiers of leaves which is ideal for the plant to bloom. Fertilize, water and set it back in the window and you will have new buds in no time.

They will flower usually from sprint to autumn.

They like to be grown indoors.

They like bright but not direct light.

A spot in morning sun would suit them.

    Don't overwater.

Fertilise as directly with liquid fertiliser.

Using this method, I've had no problems with AVs. Although it's difficult to advise you without knowing your climatic conditions.

Keep them in indirect light, no sun. Water only when the pot feels light and empty, then water well and leave it alone till it gets light again. Most important, indirect light and not too much water.
