What exactly is a 'troll?'?

Sorry, I'm new here. I was voting on questions in this category and came across the word 'troll' being used repeatedly. What does it mean, besides the literal meaning? (:

Update:

Is it really used in reference to an atheist?? The second answer seems to fit better, based on what I read.

Troll are those who post things just to piss people off or start a fight most of the time going as far to insult the people rather than the opinions. They hardly are ever interested in the conversation and sometimes changes the topic.

Troll is common, they like the attention their rabble rousing questions provoke. Poe is similar but no one knows if they are trolling or not.
