What was so special about that Nathan Merritt field goal?

That one in heritage round against the Tigers, I am struggling to find why it is so special. It even won an award in the Dally M.. made me sick lol.

Any clue why it is so good?

Lol I know, it was good but it has got more overrated than Merritt himself if thats possible. I remember thinking "noo that better not win" and it did... how? It wasnt even near the sideline, he was nearly midfield, only around 10 m to the right of the posts & 30m out, Ive seen plenty kicked from those whereabouts... Even Jennings' runaway try was a trillion times better

If the Tigers had of won/drawn that game, they would have made the finals, meaning Parramatta wouldn't have.

Also, it was kicked by a winger. Merritt said he never kicks field goals. It was from the sideline, about 35m out, with the scores locked at 22-all on the last play of the game. It was in heritage round, with rivals Wests Tigers and South Sydney Rabbitohs playing eachother. Pretty special if you ask me...

What event do you think should have won the award instead of Merritts field goal?

C'mon ! Points locked at 22 all. Both teams have had failed attempts at FG. Seconds left on the clock, so under pressure, and a winger kicks from near the sideline and gives his team a 23-22 win. And you ask why it was special.

It's a tight game 22 all. Suddenly, a winger who can't kick for sh!t nails a field goal close to the sideline, breaking the hearts of the Tigers. $1000 bet that he couldn't do it again.

It was really far out and close to the side line. There wasn't much time left on the clock. It was against the Rabbitohs' rival, Wests Tigers. Also, a winger kicked it.

Tango's pretty much hit the nail on the head! Drop kicks are probably the hardest kick to master in the game. What makes it so impressive is the fact you have a pretty small target to aim for on such a tight angle, also the pressure and wind come into the equation as well!

I still remember a bloke called Monaghan (rugby union) kicking one from the sideline in similar circumstances and that was about a 100 years ago:)

Kicked by a winger close to the sideline. Dont see that very often. So yes it was special.
