Father Damien, received saint hood from Pope,?

I am not a catholic, nor am I religious, but I feel humbled at the mention of the name of Father Damien, and the recognition of saint hood is very fitting. does anyone share these feelings with me? to me this is nothing to do with religion but humanity.

Father Damien was very cool. I'm an atheist but a decent human being is a decent human being. I've been to his colony on Moloki. Beautiful, desolate, lonely place.

Saint Damien...I'm happy to hear that Pope Benedict officially made Father Damien a saint...well deserved. I lived on the island of Oahu a number of yrs. ago and never really traveled to the other Hawaiian islands, including Molokai, but have heard of his very good works there.

Being Catholic, I know you have had to have been judged to perform 2 miracles in order for canonization, but I would imagine with Saint Damien, they probably found more than 2. I know he was unofficially the Patron Saint of HIV/AIDs patients and officially the Patron Saint of Outcasts. From his selfless work with people with Leprosy, he must have really known what it was like to be unwanted, unloved, despised...so I'm really glad the pope canonized Saint Damien.

What makes a person a "saint" is the degree to which they served others. Mother Theresa will no doubt be recognized by the Catholic Church officially just as she is already recognized by so many of us as "saintly".

He's the one who served the lepers in Hawaii and got it himself as a result? Yes, I agree. Sometimes religion and humanity are linked.
