How can I get my dog to walk without a leash?

I have a 2yr old cockapoo who is very smart. He has learned to walk with me with his leash dragging on the ground but he runs away if we unclip his leash. We don't have a fenced-in yard but we want to take him for walks unleashed, how can we train him to walk without a leash? Our resources are a long tie-out (20ft lead) and a small fenced in garden where he can run. Help please!

It can take a lot of time and effort to teach a dog to heel off leash but it's a great thing to teach your dog. Here's one way to achieve results:

Bring your dog a large, open area with no distractions. Use a ten foot line of rope as a leash, and start walking in an imaginary square, about 25 - 30 on each side. Don't talk to your dog while your walking, just keep your head up and pretend he's not there. If your dog stops walking or runs off in another direction, just keep walking and force him to follow you. At every corner of your square, stop for a minute or two and just be silent. Eventually your dog will catch on that he he has to follow you or else he will be stopped by the leash. Practice this everyday until your dog follows you closely and is not putting any tension on the leash. When he reaches that point, you can take the leash off and just repeat the same procedure, just without a leash this time. Bring some small treats and give him one at each corner until he catches on. When he does good at this, start rationing the treats out a little further until he heels with no reinforcement from treats. Another thing to incorporate into this practice is to do random "stops" and do them until your dog learns to stop when you do. It is good to make him sit and give him a treat every time he does it correctly. Be consistent, good luck.

Leash laws say dogs must be on leash. If your looking at exercising your dog. Take him to a park, with a 15 to 25 ft long line attached to you and to his collar. Have treats and let him wander on the long line at various times call him and start heading the other direction quickly

when he gets to you give him a treat. You might want to start out just using 5 ft of the line to get him to understand the reward system.

This way he learns that he can't run away, you always have control because of the line and when he returns to you he is rewarded. And best of all he gets exercise.

What? I quite dont understand what you imply... I see a few few humans stroll their puppies with out leashes and they're quality puppy running shoes from what I have obvious. There is a person in my the town who has a medium collie/sheltie form puppy and he has it so good knowledgeable he leaves her external the kind retailer together with her leash simply at the floor and he or she in no way movements a muscle. People who've puppies offleash and nonetheless undercontrol don't have anything however my recognize in view that its a robust bond to have your puppy obey you that good. I dont name that trashy in any respect.. PS handiest one million of my puppies will also be so depended on offleash and whilst I stroll her I normally throw the leash over her again rationale she in no way leaves my aspect. My different two puppies no method they might be after the primary squirrel they noticed. I believe in case your puppy is quite good behaved and you have got that bond opt for it, in case your puppy is out of manipulate, competitive and so forth then dont take that leash off. My buddy is going atving together with her puppies, and a leash isn't viable.. they have got been knowledgeable to run offleash and concentrate so no concern. I dont see how thats trashy in any respect. PPS for pronouncing its now not wise, good it may be dull if you're within the center of a town however Im speakme approximately out within the bush.. no vehicles round, not anything however bushes... finally injuries can occur and there's a hazard however believe me I have obvious puppies that obviously don't get distracted through something... even different puppies, squirrels, cats and so forth. My puppies no method as I mentioned they cant be depended on.. however I have obvious a few who will also be.

Does your town or city have a leash law? You need to find out what the law is.

In most area's there are leash laws and if your caught with your dog off-leash, you will be fined. The fine will be determined by where you live.

In NYC, if you are caught after "off-leash hours" are over, then you will get a fine of $150.00, if the dog also does not have a current dog license, then one gets another $150.00 fine, adding up to quite a bit of dollars.

Most municipalities have leash laws - your dog has to be on leash.

It's dangerous anyway, only takes one incident for your dog to get run over or hurt by another dog, keep him on leash unless you are in a securely fenced area.

Look for a dog park near you if you want to let him run free, otherwise - don't.

i think you would find here http://onlinedogtraining.enle.info/?EypL an amazing help! i am currently in the throes of training my new puppy, a german shepherd/alaskan malamute cross who is still just a baby..but i've grown up with dogs...had 2 border collies when i was just a kid.. my sister has a toy poodle, my brother has a lab, and my parents have a toy poodle and a yorkshire terrier/pomeranian cross and we lost a lab last august...

i live with my parents while i'm in school and my mom trained the dogs with Cesar's techniques.. they really do work! and that is what i'm training little Justice with... his techniques i have found more effective than a water spray bottle, rolled up newspaper, yelling or anything else!

my mom trained the lab we lost with the "Lead Training" that a trainer named John Wade taught us. You put the dog on a leash and put the leash around your ankle...wherever you goes, the dog goes and eventually, you can take the dog off for longer and longer periods of time... this works (as far as i understand) because in the end, you could be across the room and the dog will still think s/he is attached to you, therefore deterring any errant behaviour..

if you stick with it, are firm and keep a calm, but assertive, "pack leader" mentality, you will have your little terror :-) trained in no time!

I don't know where you live but you might find these helpful

i have a labrador. use a treat in your hand. and let him follow your hand with the treat inside it ( off the leash) if he runs away you stop and dont give him the treat. repeat and take away the treats just using your hand as a pointer then stroking as a reward then leave hands in your pocket and wait for the dog to follow your side. worked for me

    good luck

I didn't have to train mine. My new 3 yr old and my 7 month old just did it on their own. I guess you need to walk him ON leash more.

The only place he should be offlead is in a park or designated area.

NEVER allow your dog offlead walking down the roads however good he is.
