Would a New Jersey teacher's pension transfer to Arizona?

As a public teacher in NJ with a state pension, if I decided to move to Arizona, is it possible to transfer my pension to an Arizona state pension without any penalties?

I am not sure what you mean. Are you retiring and moving to AZ and wondering if you will get your NJ pension once you move -- the answer is yes, but you will get it from NJ.

If you are currently teaching and will be teaching in AZ, you will have to contact the NJ pension plan and have them transfer the funds to AZ's. This is just like a roll over of a 401K. However, I would look at both plans first. If the NJ plan is good, you can just leave it there and collect it when you retire and still have a second one from AZ for the years you teach in AZ. Again you will have to ask your NJ plan people if this is possible as some states will not allow you to do this, they will insist you roll it over.

Soooo -- talk to NJ, AZ and a retirement planner.
