An 8 foot long ladder is leaning against a wall. The top of the ladder is sliding down the wall at the rate of 2 feet per second. How fast is the bottom of the ladder moving along the ground at the point in time when the bottom of the ladder is 4 feet from the wall.

X^2 + Y^2 = 64

Is it?

2X (dx/dt) + 2y (dy/dt) = 0

Why is the 2x multiplied to dx/dt is it because both x and y are a function of time (in respect to time).

Is there any other method of solving this problem that is a more intuitive?

    That's it so far...

You are doing the dx/dt because you are taking the derivative of both side "with respect to t" so using implicit differentiation and the chain rule that is how you do it...

Now go back to the Pythagorean Theorem and solve for y...Then you have everything to plug in and you will get the correct answer

    dy/dt = 4 ft/s
