Does a pro have to pull this transmission?

I have a 2003 Toyota Sienna minivan. There is a serious problem with the transmission. We can get a replacement for $600 and my husband (an amateur) can do the work himself, but he cannot reset the computer. The pro will cost $2,000 that I don't have. Please help!

Update:

We will rent a hoist; we are very safety conscious...and going to a pro is not a 100% guarantee, either.

That transmission comes out the bottom after hanging the engine and removing the front subframe. If he hasn't done anything like this before this is not the time to start. It's a 9.2 hour job with a lift and the right tools. That's about $600 at my shop. Pay a pro to do this one.

the problem you will run into is the engine will have to be supported while the transmission is out ,if you don't have all the equipment there is a safety issue as well a damage caused to the engine .

Transmissions are difficult to replace. In fact, I've had transmission experts (I sell engines) tell me that over 30% of transmissions that get replaced simply needed to be adjusted.

    Depends.

Let's say you get the $600 transmission. Your husband tries, and something goes wrong.

Now you have to pay a shop to remove the trans, figure out what went wrong, reinstall it, etc.

    Costing $2000, again.

Why risk spending extra money, when you can have it done right once?

You're an adult, that should be common sense. :)
