If you were more specific (type of drugs and quantity) I could be of more help to you, but with this limited information it is hard to tell. It looks like your friend is facing up too 5 years in prison and a $10,000 fine, although this is unlikely for first time offenders.

Depends on the state's tolerance for what type of drugs he was caught with and how much he was caught with and where (was he in a school zone?). He may have to serve some time and go into a treatment program
