100% cpu even after restoring to factory defaults.?

my computer was constantly at 100% cpu usage for about a week. I scanned for viruses, spyware, registry errors, defrags, deleted temp files. everything was clean. I couldn't figure it out so I gave up and restored my computer to factory defaults.

even after restoring to factory defaults my computer is at 100% cpu usage. I haven't done anything on it at all. what is the problem with my computer? my ram is only at 50-60.

I have a dell inspiron e1405 windows vista home premium 32 bit

Update:

I found my cpu usage by pressing ctrl+alt+delete.

two I end the task of whatever is taking up the most space then something else shoots up and takes up most of the space.

three I know system idle process is normal

four by pressing f8 a bunch of times during start up I get the extra options like safe mode and repair. I clicked on repair and hit restore to factory image (restore to factory defaults) it pretty much is like reinstalling vista with a complete wipe.

How are you measuring your CPU utilization?

first, restore isn't the same as recover. which did you use?

restore is in the control panel and system tools. recover is either an aspect of the manufacturers cds which came w/ the system, or a 'recovery partition' on the hard drive accessed at post/boot.

also, be more specific about what is most or all of the cpu usage. SOME/many people make the mistake of looking at the 'system iddle' of 99% and think it's actual use...

okay, sounds like you've made a few good choices and diagnostic moves. however, you still haven't said what the culprits are which are causing the usage. you're also using the word 'space' in a sentence which you should be talking about the cpu resources in terms of percent usage. if you really mean space, that's ram, not cpu and shows up on the same tab, but if i'm just misreading/misunderstanding, please forgive, but you may want to clear up this point...

again tho, factory image and restore are not the same thing, but you used them kinda in the same sense in the same sentence. same story here, ifyou could be mor clear here, it may help, but it does sound like you've done this before and are aware of much of htese procedures.

Go to Task manager and processes tab. Look for what item is claiming the usage. You can use this tool (Process Explorer) to find out what's up with it.

    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb...

Also, if you are seeing "system idle process" near 100 or 99% that's normal... it's just saying it's mostly idle.
