Christians, do you think Bible is far more important than college education?

I believe the Bible is much much much more important than any colleges.

If you disagree with me please say it nice way.

TY!

It's simple. Only the Bible, the study of it and following the guidance found there, can give us everlasting life.

That being said, a good education is important in order to fulfill our financial obligations (support ourselves and/or our family) and even for our ministry. Perhaps university, perhaps trade school or college for some. It's a personal decision.

However, Jehovah's Witnesses are schooled weekly and it's not only in the Bible. Proper speech and grammar, the ability to speak in front of an audience on many different subjects, how to do research, are all part of our Theocratic Ministry School.

FYI, I not only survived without going to university, I thrived, because I inhale books like oxygen. And for the last 25 years I've made more than the average graduate of college or university. Some things can't be taught at school they are learned in "real" life.

Why do you want to tell her? Are you angry with her for something else? If you want to pick a fight with her, sure, tell her - there's plenty of hypocrisy to go on there. What I don't understand is why someone who parties hard, shags around and steals would want to go to a christian college or become a youth pastor. She'll get found out, surely? Leave her to get on with it - if she really believes she should realise that, in the terms of her religion, she's committing sins. If she doesn't really believe, she's even more hypocritical, and a fake. But other than wanting to have a pop at your sister, why are you bothered?

I think the bible is far more important then any college education. the bible can teach you tons of things. in college you go for years and years and you can not even get a job. people are not hiring. either you have to much education from college or you do not have enough. so I think I rather stay with the bible and close to Jehovah God and Jesus Christ. they know what is best for us

Yes, though not negating completely, the other.

    But if given a choice.

I think the people YOU ALLOW to teach you the Bible are FAR more important than the people YOU ALLOW you to teach College subjects.

Do your research, KNOW the subject or choose the subject you want to learn and then GET THE BEST TEACHERS available... Do your hard work.

It just so happens that the religion I belong too has NOT ENCOURAGED a hope for the future in a college education OVER A BIBLE education.

Then they went on to give me a LIFETIME of

    Education on

    1. Nature, astronomy, water, animals, biology, food.

    2. Philosophy and where to find answers.

    3. Health

    4. Culture, lands, countries, people.

    5. Cleanliness

    6. religion

You TALK to people from all over the Earth, and see these things first hand, going from door to door.

Or traveling to other countries for vacations.

A friend of mine, a brother, an elder in another congregation teaches a class in college on horticulture.

He does some of the most beautiful work and has taught so many people this trade and given them jobs.

One day he took his theocratic ministry school book to the campus and placed it with another professor who

told him the next week, that we have the equivalent of a 4 year college education in English in this book.

My doctor a sister that was raised as one of Jehovah's Witnesses by a family that were them their whole lives chose to go to college and become an M.D.

She had good support coming and going. Nothing wrong with that.

Another is an attorney, nothing wrong with that, a few in journalism..

And we study that theocratic ministry school book and NEVER graduate from it.

SO if you have the right education in religious/spiritual things, chances are, according to my experience you get both.

So yes, EVERYTHING teaches us. But if you have the RIGHT education and make the right choices, you never have to suffer ignorance.

    2 Timothy 3:

14 You, however, continue in the things that you learned and were persuaded to believe, knowing from what persons you learned them 15 and that from infancy you have known the holy writings, which are able to make you wise for salvation through the faith in connection with Christ Jesus. 16 All Scripture is inspired of God and beneficial for teaching, for reproving, for setting things straight, for disciplining in righteousness, 17 that the man of God may be fully competent, completely equipped for every good work. '

I am so thankful I am COMPLETELY educated. BUT I am still PROBABLY going to take some classes to get a better job and health insurance too. We must have a sound mind and remember to "make sure of all things"

    Good question Edoedo.

The bible since it gives us a hope with a firm basis (paradise and resurrection hope). Also the bible gives sound guidance of how to live a beneficial life.

They're not comparable. That's like asking is our blood more important than oxygen.

If you're talking about possessing, I'd rather possess a college education than possess a bible. If you're talking about the existence of colleges and of the bible then that's different. The fact that there are colleges wouldn't make a difference to my life especially if I didn't have a college education, however, that fact that the bible exists, whether or not I possess one, does make a tremendous difference in my life.

The only thing the Bible has on college is that it's a hell of a lot cheaper than my textbooks.

  • 1 decade ago

    They're both important.

The Bible will help to build your morals and life skills.

College will help you build an education, and job skills.

Most of the time you need college to do well and support a family in a city situation.

It depends on what you mean as "important." I'd argue the Bible is more important in that it provides us with the grand story of our Christian heritage, and provides important guides for living our lives in a Christ-like way. On the other hand, we have a responsibility as Christians to do good things in the world and to care for our families. In today's world, the Bible alone won't allow all of us to do that. For example, if God has gifted you with mathematical talent, and you want to use that talent for God's Glory (maybe accountant at a church, or working to make the economy more friendly to the poor, or whatever), you need the skills that you would learn at college in order to fulfill God's gift. Even more simply, I expect any preacher who stands before a Church to give God's message should have attended college, so that they can speak with more learned authority on the Bible and the World itself.

So yes, the Bible is "more important," but college is, for many of us, also necessary. Not everyone has to go to college, but if God leads you that way (through your natural gifts), it would be wrong to not follow that path.
