99 Ford Escort won't go into gear. Ideas?
It was working fine, no slipping, no noises.
It worked the night before. I started the car, which was a little difficult, it didn't want to run, once running I shifted to reverse, nothing, drive, nothing. It's all neutral. Park works, the shifting linkage is in place and appears to be working. Fluid level is good. It's a little brown.
Any ideas?
Simple fix like a vacuum hose off, or something more serious like a fluid pump?
Yes, I checked fluid with engine running. In hindsight it seemed high. I'll check again. That may indicate the pump is out.
External linkage. The best I can tell it works normally.

I would say the tranny went out but it's hard to tell without seeing it.

did you check the fluid with the engine running on the dipstick? most cars today use electronic transmissions. many will stall if a system is faulty. is this a external linkage on the is car for the trans. is it possible the bracket is slipping on the shifter shaft.

could be your pump, trans range sensor, shift linkage came off, only a trained eye will be able to tell once they see the car
