What made you choose your breed of dog?

Hiya.

Was at obedience class last night and we got talking so I thought I'd share.

What made you choose the breed of dog you have? Do you work your dog or take part in some kind of activity? Would you pick this breed again?

I have a Newf as my neighbour had one and we wanted a good pub dog and now she competes in agility. We then chose a Saint Bernard to compliment our Newf (size and temprement) and he takes part in obedience comps. We would definitely choose both breeds again.

What about you guys?

I chose a pom because I wanted a smaller dog that I could cuddle, and control easily on walks. I liked the fluffy hair and the softness. I also liked the way the face looks. Finally, I wanted a dog that would be a lap dog but would be playful as well. I got all of those qualities in my dog, plus easy trainability.

I also have a GSD. When looking for a larger breed to add to my family, I wanted a handsome obedient breed with lots of energy to play. I wanted a dog that while sweet, would be intimidating (even if he wouldn't hurt a fly). I also love huge pointy ears. Once again, I got all I wanted in a GSD.

I would definitely get both breeds again.

I've got a Golden retriever. I just loved the breed so much because of they're handsome looks and intelligence. I've had my retriever, Shadow, for four years now, so he's not that old. But, because he has such a gentle nature, he acts like an old man! He's asleep a lot of the time and is really sensible! He sometimes does funny things though like when he farts and then looks at someone else in the room as if to blame it on them, and he does sometimes growl in his sleep! But he is also very intelligent and loyal. He knows loads of tricks such as beg, rollover, spin, fetch, all sorts! And, EVERY time we come home he's there at the doorway with a shoe or a toy, ready to greet us, every single time! He's really the best dog ever!

I'd give another breed a chance because they're all lovely, but retrievers will always be my top dog!

I have a cavalier king charles spaniel and a shih tzu. I love my dogs to bits. Yes I might choose these breed of dogs again as they are so sweet and cute, but I may get two different breeds in the future as I like trying out new things if i always got a shih tzu or a cavalier then I wouldn't be able to see what other breeds are like. Shih Tzu's are quite a cute breed as they are known to bring gifts which is horrible in my account as my dog gave me a dead mouse, but they also have yappy barks.

I dont know really it all depends on what I look for in a dog in the furture I may decide I was a very obedient breed of dog.

Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retrievers are very cute. Well, I was first drawn to the Australian Cattle Dog breed when I was a kid. One of the kids in our neighbourhood owned a dog called Cooper who was the smartest thing EVER. We would watch him preform his tricks for hours straight, fascinated. Actually, some of them were actually funny cheats... For example, he told us the dog could "count". We would all watch him order Cooper to run around the table a certain number of times, and he did so. But what we didn't knew is that he kept a biscuit behind his back, and when Cooper had finished running around the table he would break the biscuit in his hands, which made Cooper stop. LOL. ;-) There was also this Australian (?) TV show about this kids that owned a very cute and smart ACD. Can anyone remember that? No? OK... Ah ah. Later on in life, many years later, I was looking for a dog to own by my own. I not only found (and find) ACD's lovely, I also thought they were good for me. I'm usually a strong person with a strong personality so getting a dog that tends to have a stubborn (but inteligent) side would be no problem. They need a lot of exercise but I myself need too, or I get extremly bored. I don't mind the shedding. They say ACD's are not good with kids. I don't live with kids but anyways I think that's total bullsh*t, out of personal experience. They are NOT Labs but they aren't naturally agressive in any possible way... Just a little tendency to nip... OF COURSE. In fact, I *AM* a little bit of an ACD as well... I'm extremly dominant, sometimes I don't get along with individuals of the same sex (I usually do but most of my friends are men) and I'm very energetic. ;-)

I have 2 Cavalier King Charles Spaniel/Toy Poodle cross puppies. They are litter mates and are almost 7 months old now.

I really wanted a dog though I didn't mind what breed I got, I had picked the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel out as a breed that would suit me in both looks and characteristics.

When I started looking, I saw an advert for my puppies so I went to see them and I knew they were for me :)

We don't do any activities or anything, I just wanted pets and companions and that is definately what these two are.

As they are cross breeds, even if I got this combination again, it doesn't mean they will be the lovely, friendly, happy puppies that I know.

    HI, good question.

I got an Alaskan Malamute rescue dog because the breed's history and amazingness always intrigued me. We wanted a high-energy dog who could/would love the long snowy winters of northern New England. I wanted a dog to ski with, snowshoe and winter hike with and a dog that is a "tough dog" capable of living outside(he doesnt, but he could) and a dog that's loveable, loyal and loves to be active.

Now, we got our South African Boerboel from a breeder. We wanted a LARGE dog, a guarding/working farm dog as we live out in the country on a 6 acre property. wanted a dog that was able to watch the chickens and keep coyotes and bear away, fight and kill them if need be.... We wanted a good family dog that is loveable and OK with our 3 cats. So, the Boerboel is an amazing all around farm dog with all these qualities... and also, with a mastiff type dog (he's 160lbs) we wanted a DRY MOUTHED breed of mastiff. THe boerboel is dry mouthed (well, relatively... lol)

My husband and I wanted a very loyal dog that would be good with kids if we had any in the future. We also like the outdoors and our dog is very high energy so she is a blast to play with outside. This breed was my husband's choice- I'm more partial to Shiba-inus and huskys, but now that we have had a lab I think I would not hesitate in getting another one. They are just so sweet and friendly- I've never met a mean lab!

I have an australian shepherd. I chose this breed b/c my parents owned one before me and it was the family pet. I never had any other breed so i chose this breed. I also like dogs that can work all day and basically never get tired. I wanted a dog like that but it is true that every dog is an individual bc my dog is nothing like what an Australian shepherd should be.

I have a lab. We don't compete in agility, but we do some fun agility stuff at home. I chose to get a lab because I wanted a dog that would be active, easy to train, loyal, and intelligent. And yes, I would definitely pick this breed again.

She chose me. We were looking for a rescue dog, something small and well mannered, when an enormous Ridgeback/dalmation/staffie/goodness knows what else X, who had been overlooked in kennels for weeks gave us 'that look'. I can't tell you how much joy she has brought us.

We are just about to resue another as a companion for her and the same thing has happened. We were looking for a nice little male, possibly a spaniel. We're bringing an ex-racing, abandoned Greyhound the size of a shetland pony home tomorrow. He's been in kennels all his life but has the sweetest nature. When he sees his comfy bed, his place on the sofa and what he gets for dinner he may just think he's died and gone to heaven!
