They were Georgian (in the UK).
It depends where you are thinking of. In most cities they were terraced houses many survive today. Some of the great estates in London were built at this time eg the Duke of Bedford's Estate in Bloomsbury. Before the railways people tended to use local materials so they are stone, brick whatever was available. Even the most modest of houses neede a load of servants to run them.
If they were country houses of the aristocracy they were probably Palladian in style, made fashionable by Lord Burlington and his chums. In Twickenham Horace walpole was experimenting with Gothic which would become fashionable in the next century but this was very much against the mainstream trend. If you were poor - probably a hovel, timber framed or mud/clunch depending on the location. No sanitation of course, and no electricity.
