If you could live on or very near these lakes: Maggiore, Garda, Lugano (in Italy) or Como, which would it be?
I'm thinking about buying a villa in a town right on one of the largest lakes in northern Italy, or within a few kilometres, but with a good view of the lake. I'd stay there from 4 to 6 weeks, four times a year (in each season). I really enjoy classical music recitals and a good movie theatre not too far a drive away would be desirable. A few, but not necessarily a lot of, good restaurants and cafes would also be nice. Do you have any ideas? Thank you.
And if you could recommend particular towns or villages, with some details, that would be fabulous, too!!

All of the lakes are nice. Personally, I would buy something around Malcesine on the north end of Lake Garda. Garda is the largest and cleanest of the lakes. Right now, I live about an hour south of the lake.

I think Garda is the most scenic lake. Once I went to Gardone Riviera (west coast of the lake, in Lombardy) and I got amazed. I would pick a house near there. Wild nature, beautiful landscapes, amazing little towns.
It is also close to the famous Verona (with its Arena, biggest classical theatre and home to concerts of any kind) and of course to Milan. Plus on the southern side of the lake there are small towns (Desenzano, Peschiera, Sirmione) with big clubs and great nightlife.
Take a look at Google Earth.
cheers

Hi,
I advice Lake Maggiore, is near Milano and near Switzerland and is very very nice place, but villa with lake view is not economic on Lake Maggiore.

Definitely Lake Como. It's stunning. My favourite is Lago d'Orta though. Much less touristy.

I have lived very near to two of the lakes, first near Lake Orta (http://www.my-italy-piedmont-marche-and-more.com/l... and then near Lake Garda ( http://www.venice-italy-veneto.com/best-beach-on-l... )
Either of them are lovely and definitely number one and two when it comes to the Italian lakes. If I really had to choose one I think it would be Orta though.
