Ovum fertilization during human reproduction?
I'm asking this because I saw a thing on TV where people were arguing about life and stuff and a vicar said that God gives a soul to a person at the moment a sperm fertilizes an ovum.
I can't remember the exact counter-argument, but some guy said something about quite a few ovum getting fertilized during sex but only one going on to become a fetus, so by his argument there'd be more souls that had never been born than ones that had.
Is this guy right, or half-right?

Not all fertilised ova implant in the uterus and become a foetus. This is a fact.

First, each month a females uterus will prepare for a fertilized egg. Generally one egg is released from an ovary every 28 days occasionally two. Remember though, this does not take into consideration the use of fertility drugs and artificial insemination, etc.. So as for quite a few ovum being fertilized each month that don't develop any further than that, generally this is not what happens. I believe that your question is more of a spiritual one than a reproduction lesson. So, let me first say that depending on what your religious beliefs are, this answer can alter from person to person, you would have to decide what answer resonates with your spiritual beliefs.
When does the soul enter the body? Spiritual leaders have debated over this issue for years, it is a main source for controversy with regard to pro choice or pro life activists. Some faiths believe that an un baptized baby, fetus, etc. does not go to heaven. You can see how this is not an easy question to answer. I would recommend that you first start with deciding what your faith is. If you are unsure then you might want to research various religions to understand their beliefs. Look internally for answers and what your heart is telling you. Do you believe that souls get lost somewhere if the body it is attached to does not ever take a breath? Think about it and see what you believe to be the answer. With regard to the reproduction aspect of this question, here is a link to explain that. http://kidshealth.org/parent/general/body_basics/f...
I don't know your age so the site is kid friendly but informative. I hope this helps.

It's true that an ovum can get fertilized and not implant. So that's one argument. Normally only one egg is released from the ovaries at a time so typically I don't think a bunch would get fertilized like you were saying.
Not to get all religious since this is a scientific question, but the doctrine that the soul enters the cell (since that's all it is at that point, a cell) at the time of fertilization, is mans doctrine. Not God's. It's not biblical nor has it been revealed to any true prophet or apostle that would have authority to speak for God. (No offense to the vicar) :)

I've never heard that counter argument before. As far as i know humans generally only release one ovum at a time, exceptions result in non identical twins. Its possible that if two ova are fertilised, one may spontaneously abort, given the fact that not all fertilisations result in a pregnancy. But I don't think its routine.
Also once fertilisation takes place, further ovum release is inhibited.
