yes it's a scam to get information to steal your identity yahoo would never ask for this type of information, there is another that looks like it's from the FBI also a scam. and another from the bank of america.also a scam. any time you are asked for your password or social security number by email it is definatly a scam
Source(s): got all of them - 1 decade ago
I got one of these. Not from Yahoo, but it was pretty much the same as you described it.
This is a scam, for sure. No administrative body from any company (Yahoo, your bank, or anyone else) will ask you for your login info when they contact you. The only time you will ever be asked by administration or customer service for your password and/or login is when you contact them yourself first. Don't respond to the e-mail; mark it as spam.

It`s a scam.
The only way to verify if your account is active, is by logging in to check mail.
Yahoo, nor anyone else with a legit request, will ask your details like this over open and unsecured email.
Also, the grammar and wording is not quite right.

Yahoo would not ask you for your personal information in an E-mail like that.
It is a scam to get your personal information and/or money.
Do not respond to it.
Report it, forward it to the FTC at spam@uce.gov and to the abuse desk of the sender's ISP.
Also, if the email appears to be impersonating a bank or other company or organization, forward the message to the actual organization.
