Do Ubuntu (Linux) builds come with a web browser or do I need to download that separately?

Got an Ubuntu disc to try out a Linux build. Wondering if I needed to download a seperate web brower (Firefox) for it.

As the others have said ubuntu has a couple browsers preinstalled.

Linux does not work the same way as windows does. With windows you have to buy the OS and then you have to buy most of the software and games. Or you search the net for free/cheap games and programs to download and install.

With linux you get the OS for free and you get ALL the software that linux can use for free, and you download and install it by using the built in package manager (software installer and remover). Ubuntu uses the Synaptic package manager. Go to your main menu and look under the System category or administration for a package manager. You should use that to install the programs/software that you want. If you use the "windows method" of installing software you will soon end up with programs that don't run well, are missing critical parts, and eventually your whole system could have problems. The beauty of the package manager is that it knows exactly which files you have on your computer now and which ones to install or remove to install the software that you want and have it work smoothly. Generally the "windows method" leads to what is called "dependency hell": some necessary/dependent file is necessary but cannot be found or conflicts with a file that is currently on the computer, and the program will not run properly.

Here is a link to the ubuntu package manager called Synaptic. This will explain more fully how the package manager works. If you use the package manager you will have an easier time installing software. If some piece of software that you want/need is not in the "warehouse" then you should ask for advice on how and where to get it and how to install it.

I would also suggest that you go through all your menu items to see what you have.

    Good luck

Firefox is the standard browser in most Linux distributions. There are probably about a dozen browsers you can install in Linux and part of the file repositories. Just take your pick. I installed three browsers and open them when I'm in one browser and need to do a search to find an answer in another browser.

Firefox is the default browser for Ubuntu. If your downloading the Alpha builds to try them out you may need to download and install Firefox but any released version or Beta version should have Firefox preinstalled.

Ubuntu generally comes with Firefox and Epiphany web browsers installed. Epiphany uses some firefox technology but aims to be more open-source than Firefox.

Yes, it come with a preinstalled web browser- Mozilla Firefox. Not only web browser but it comes with lots of other applications including office suite(OpenOffice.org), Disk Burner(Brasero), Multimedia Players. But you need to install codes to play mp3s and some other multimedia files. But you have a Internet connetion(not too slow), installing codecs is not a hard job. You just open the file and it will notify you about available codecs if they are not preinstalled.

Also you might be having the "Konqueror" browser if using KDE environment for Ubuntu.
