Should the Grand Final ever be played interstate?

Magpies question on home finals got me thinking of this. I reckon the Queenslanders definitely have a point when they say that they are due a Brisbane grand final. What does anyone else think?

Should ever be played anywhere besides Sydney or Brisbane? What about (dare I say it) a grand final in Melbourne, either now or in the distant future?

Rugby League was established in Australia in Sydney and every GF since then has been played in Sydney.

When the other franchise teams from out of state and o/s applied to join, what was then basically a NSW comp, they knew the rules.

Since then, in the interests of the game Final Series games have been played elsewhere but the GRAND FINAL STAYS IN SYDNEY.

ADD: When the WC Eagles played the Sydney Swans in the AFL Grand Final they didn't even consider moving it because the home of the AFL GF is Melbourne.

I really think Brisbane have a strong case since they were essentially a strong League community even before the Sydney clubs realised a lot of their players were coming from the Northern region of Australia.

Now they have the Titans establishing themselves rather well I don't think it will be too long before this idea will gain momentum.

I'd love to watch a Grand final played in a weather window where the conditions are perfect for the players and the fans.

For now, the Grand Final stays in Sydney. Melbourne is ruled out because it's in the heart of AFL land. Brisbane has a strong argument but the ANZ (as KiwiJoey mentioned) has more capacity. Also, NSW is larger in terms of population, so I think (hey, I may be wrong) there are more NRL supporters in NSW.

I think the GF should be played in the home city of whichever team of the 2 finalists finished higher on the ladder at the end of the regular season. I think that's a fair reward for the team that was the better team thru out the regular season ( assuming of course that the 2 teams come from differing cities ).

Why should a Qld team, Melbourne or the Warriors have to play a Sydney team on their territory if they were the better team thru the regular season ?

And sure the crowd might be bigger if played in Sydney but wherever the game is played it's only a small percentage of the total viewers who get to see it live. And, yes the gate takings would be higher in Sydney but why should money always dictate where games are played ? And, yes it's traditional that the grand final has always being played in Sydney but that was only because originally the comp was purely a Sydney based comp. now that the comp is no longer a Sydney comp then IMO Sydney no longer should have automatic rights to host the GF.

No. The GF has traditionally been played in Sydney and that is where it should remain. Interstate teams were aware before they became a part of the NRL that the GF is a Sysdney affair.

As to melbourne? It may be considered if the AFL GF is played in Sydney, Brisbane or Perth.

It should never be held in Melbourne. They have their own Grand Final. The AFL Grand Final would never be played in Sydney. In a few years, maybe Brisbane can have it for a year, but not permanently. The NRL originated in NSW, so the Grand Final should stay there.

No, the only reason its called NRL because it expanded beyond NSW and could no longer be called NSWRL. Rugby League is NSW and there arent enough fans in Melbourne to even consider moving it there. Even though there are fans in Brisbane it still wont be moved there either. GF = Sydney

    Good question

To be fair and honest Melbourne Storm deserve a home GF (after all they reached 4 GF in a row)and probably so do the Broncos.

No not at this stage in the future maybe, like the Super Bowl, Suncorp is only 55,000 if it was a bigger stadium like 70,000 min, i might have a different attitude

Not as long as ANZ Stadium remains the ground with the biggest capacity that is available (the MCG is not available).

Why would the NRL take the grand final to a stadium that has a capacity of 55,000 when they're having no problems bringing in over 80,000 to ANZ Stadium.
