Swelling in the sides of the head of turtles is generally a bad sign, as gimmeanamenow has indicated.

It is the classic appearance of an ear abscess (or in this case, abscesses, as it sounds like both sides are affected.)

A vet trip is definitely required, and if infection is diagnosed, depending on how bad it is, antibiotics alone may be enough to clear it up, or it could require surgical removal of the accumulated infected matter.

Could be ear infections or abcesses... you should probably take it to a vet that knows something about turtles...

Yep, reptiles get to go to the vet, too.

At first I thought it was cute, but #1 answer might be right. Usually both sexes should be the same. Good Luck!

Mine has big cheeks too. Its nothing to worry about. Do you have a big aquarium, heater, filter and Uv lamp? If not, buy them. I consulted a vet, and she told me to give them all kinds of meat and vegetables. So don't worry that much and no, its still not usuall. Hope i helped!
