Should we tell China...?
that we will not buy any more of its products unless it indemnifies American buyers if the products they buy from Chinese manufacturers do not meet all standards for safety?
We have been buying wooden toys from China for years, only to find the manufacturers had used lead-based paints. Lead can cause permanent brain damage in children; it can even be lethal to them. Lead is an additive that makes the paint easier to spread. It does not occur naturally in any of the components used to make paint.
Last year, several of our pet food manufacturers bought wheat that was contaminated by rodenticides that killed many dogs and cats.
Recently, we found that Chinese-made drywall emits toxic sulfuric fumes and corrodes pipes. It has reportedly made many people sick and rendered their homes uninsurable and unsalable.
In some cases, our buyers permit the Chinese manufacturers of various products to perform the inspections on the products they make and sell to us! That is insane!

Because we can't tell China much or make them mad or they won't loan us any of our money back. Thanks Clinton and Bush.

i actively pay attention to where the products come from that i buy. i buy fair trade and nafta. not only do they help people out within our hemisphere, but it reduces the rate of illegal immigration, provides a higher quality of life for the working class people in our hemisphere and ensures the money reaches the workers and not just the corporations.
the chinese are always pulling crap like this and we're not going to figure it out until they have poisoned half of our children.
not true thalia... our problem is that we turn to walmart for everything. if you live in a small town, this may pose a problem, but the vast majority of americans live in communities of 250,000 or larger. this broadens our shopping options. fair trade is currently a life style choice. but if enough people jump on board we can make it work. this shouldn't be a liberal or conservative ideal, it should be a moral imperative for all people. besides, who can't shop on ebay these days? go to a public library and get on the computers for free. no credit card for paypal? go to a check cashing place and get one of those prepaid visa's. no interest and no annual fee or contract.
there's a million ways to be fair trade.

The only problem with that is that our shop shelves would then be mostly bare.
You will be hard pressed to find much that isn't made in China these days.
So just refusing to buy isn't going to work.
