What do you think about all of the Gay (male) stereotypes around?

Like how we dress strangely, act girly, wear drag and other such things people associate with gays.

The only time I've ever seen such things is at Mardi Gras or a Gay event, but I want to know other peoples opinions.

I try not too, it's like keeping up with the flavor of the week. After a month, I just figure that there will be a new rule to come out and I don't care what it is.

  • People stereotype because it's easy for them to place people into various boxes. It's wrong of course but to these people it's not cos it's easy. It's also a wider community version of us who only see the Mardi Gras and think we're like that all year round.

Unfortunately stereotyping is generally of a negative nature perpetrated by people who resist being informed of the truths of the matters at hand. In that case you can't reason with a person with both hands over their ears...

Like all stereotypes, sometimes true but other times not. The thing abot stereotypes is that they are fine so long as the person possesing the stereotype fully understands that the stereotype is just a generalisation and are therefore capable of meeting a gay (or other stereotyped person) without having preconceptions based on stereotypes. In other words he person has to know and accept that for the most part the stereotype is not an absolute

As with any stereotype it gets annoying if it's applied to me, as acting girly I certainly do not. As a leatherman I'm possibly in danger of looking like another stereotype but somehow people seem not to know about that one! But objectively, what do you see at a gay event that attracts all sorts - mostly just ordinary-looking men, with a sprinkling of more obviously stereotypical sorts that just stand out from looking "different". People see what they want to see more than what is actually there, especially if they're anti-gay.

The reason all gays are seen as being flamboyant, is because the falmboyant gays are the only ones who are obvious. Say you're at the mall. And you see a guy walking girly, with a purse. You don't know him, but he's obviously gay. But in that mall, there are 5 other gays, but they look and behave just like an average guy. You don't know them either, don't know that they're gay, and so they don't register in your mind as being gay. So you saw 6 gays, but only noticed one. Then you go home and talk about the fruit you saw at the mall, unaware that there were others that you simply didn't know were gay. that one flamer was the representative for the gay community to you, because that's the only one you noticed. Do you see? Well people who aren't in our community, they never see or know about the more masculine gay men, so they think all gays are feminine. the masculine gays, hating that they are always clumped together with the flaming queens, resent these steryotypes and dislike fem guys. you see this in personals. no fats. no fems. as much as the gay community hates the discrimnation against us, we discriminate by trying to distance ourselves from our gay brothers who cannot hide in a closet. the fem steryotipical gays are teh backbone of our community because they can't hide it. personally, i love the fem boys, and if you all don't, hey more for me!

I Hate Hate Gay stereotypes. They make being gay laughed at and weak. I also think it's very weird to act like the different sex u are. Mean if i wanted a girl i would just date one.

It kinda makes me somewhat disheartened. That so much of society truly believes - even without being malicious - that all homosexual men are that trite and ridiculous stereotype. We're people. We each have our own unique likes, dislikes, quirks, vices, ups, downs, and flaws.

I think the worst part of those stereotypes is that it makes us seem less like people and more like ridiculous TV characters. And it's so evident in society. Whenever someone finds out/is told that I like guys their response is almost always "Wow. I never would have guessed." or "But you don't seem gay?". It just shows how misinformed people are, even without being malicious.

Well they seem like caricatures. I have met people over the years who are close to these types, but I think most folks are a lot less obvious and have to like work and get along with others?

I believe like all stereotypes they are wrong. The majority of people barely fit into stereotypes.
