The Monroe is said to be a relatively painless piercing process, compared to others, as this area of the body is soft and contains few nerves. There is a small risk of piercing the superior labial artery, which lies just above the upper lip.

The amount of pain experienced during the piercing process differs from person to person and depends on the specific location of the piercing. Those with thicker lips or well-exercised facial muscles will have more flesh or muscle to pierce,[2] so they may experience more discomfort. Men may experience slightly more pain than women, as repeated shaving can make the skin of the upper lip tougher and harder to pierce. The orbicularis oris (the sphincter muscle around the mouth) is used in the playing of brass and woodwind instruments; as a result, players of these instruments tend to have a larger muscle around the mouth and may experience more discomfort during the piercing process.

As with similar piercings, Monroes can cause long-term damage to the gums and teeth. The back-disk of metal jewelery worn in this piercing rubs against them, potentially resulting in gum recession or damage to tooth enamel. Plastic labret-studs are available to minimize this problem.

It doesn't really hurt at all- or not that i can remember anyway lol it does get a little swollen after it's been done and i found it a little difficult to eat anything that day but the swelling goes down within a day...

I've had mine for 6 yrs now and not had any problems with looking after it at all... the first few weeks you will have to clean it but now i do nothing.

It can be a little tricky to change the piercing- i use bonjela- a mouth ulcer treatment to numb the skin while changing it and it's fine!

    hope this helped :D

I just got mine done today. Honestly it stung a little but nothing anyone couldn't handle. You just have to use antiseptic mouthwash after everytime you eat and use like h2Ocean or bactine on the outside of it.

It doesn't hurt at all. Mine didn't even bleed when the guy did it :D

Haha yeah, its pretty easy to care for. Just disinfect it twice a day (morn, evening) and after every meal.
