Newer PS3 models (including the Slim) do not have the PS2 Emulation built in, therefore they cannot play PS2 games.
The older models are the only ones that *can* play PS2 games.
Read this chart for more information:

In short:
How many USB Ports does your PS3 have?
2 USB Ports: No, it will not play PS2 games.
4 USB Ports: Yes, it will play PS2 games.

ok, first look at your PS3. does it have 4 USB ports? does it have a memory card reader? if not, then ur ps3 most likely has 2 usb ports, and no memory card readers. which means, it is not compatible with any PS2 games. only the ps3's with 4 USB ports, and memory card readers can play ps2 games. the one with them are the 60GB, 20GB(i think) and old 80GB models. the new 80gb models don't have backwards compatability. oh and, software updates dont do anything to help u play ps2 games. it just adds new stuff to your XMB menu.

search is your friend. learn to use it! seriously! this is the MOST asked question on Answers!!!
backward compatibility for the PS3 with PS2 games is as follows on NTSC systems:
20GB (4 USB slots, no longer in production) - yes
60GB (4 USB slots, no longer in production) - yes
80GB with 4 USB slots (no longer in production, bundled with MGS4 or Motor Storm) - yes
40GB (2 USB slots, no longer in production) - NO
80GB with 2 USB slots - NO
160GB (2 USB slots) - NO
120GB/slim (2 USB slots) - NO
any other up coming PS3's - NO
PAL systems only have one backwards compatible system, and that's the 60GB.
in short: if it has 4 USB slots, yes. if it has 2 USB slots, no.
all PS3s play PS1 games.

"If a PLAYSTATION 3 is not backward compatible, you will not be able to add this function through any hardware (i.e., changing the hard disk drive) or software (i.e., updates, homebrew) upgrades or modifications. "
that came DIRECTLY from Sony's own website: http://playstation.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/playstatio...
long story short, you have the 80GB with 2 USB ports and no PS2 games will work on it EVER.
