It depends on your state. In many, there is a card you receive. In others you get a letter once your registration has been accepted. Most town halls have a list of the registered voters in their town. If your name isn't on that list, you may have to re-register just to make sure. In most cases, if you are not active (vote regularly in elections) or if you don't respond to the town census, you can be removed from the list.

It seems that while I have a voter registration card and I show up for voting they won't accept it. What they recognize as being proof of registration happens to be the voter roster in front of them.
I asked what good the card is and they told me it was a souvenir for me for voting.
