Why is a V used on Monuments instead of a U?

I have seen this on many chiseled monuments like the 10 Commandants on the courtyard of the county courthouse and cornerstones of many buildings.

    No, it isn't carving needs

    Because it is a lot easier to carve the straight lines of the V than the curve of the U. No, seriously, that is the reason why. If you look at the viking letters and original Roman inscriptions, you will see only lines and no curves as well and it is a reflection of their carving technology.
