Why can't I do an ollie?
I just started skateboarding 2 months ago. I have only practiced moving around and picking up speed, so now I'm very good at cruising on my skateboard and turning and stopping and the rest of that stuff. I can go pretty fast. But after watching Mike V and Chad Muska, I think it's time to learn some tricks, so I thought I'd start with the ollie. I watched tons and tons of "How to Ollie" videos with pro skaters, and I know every single step of doing an ollie. I can do everything fine, except the part when I have to bring the side of my foot up to the nose of the board (and landing). When I try to bring my foot up, it either goes off of the board or I just jump off the board and land on my butt without the skateboard leaving the ground. What's wrong with what I'm doing? I practice the ollie almost every single day but it's so hard!

What I did, was first practice doing it while holding on to a gate or something. Then, once you get that, try it on grass. It's actually a bit harder on grass because it's harder to pop. But once you get that, it'll be easy on the road.

It just takes some more board feel to learn how to ollie. Ollies are very simple, yet so complicated. Start in learning how to ollie in grass so you don't fail completely and die, but you shouldn't get hurt just learning to ollie. Don't bring your foot all the way up to the nose, just a little behind the front bolts or directly on the bolts. You can also practice this stationary by placing your foot on the tail and standing beside the board so it is not flat. Then, practice getting that sweet spot during the sliding. Here are my perfect steps to learn the ollie...
Before you ollie, pretend like you are not even on a skateboard and just jump up fast and high with ONLY your backfoot. Practice popping the board up with you standing behind it and practice popping it up.
Once you get that down, you practice sliding your foot up the board. Not sure how to tell you the best way to do is, but if you have a videocamera, tape your feet and then review it.
Then, take your knees and think about SLAMMING THEM UP INTO YOUR CHEST. This will add a lot more height into the ollie.
Lastly, slam your feet into the ground and absorb the impact by bending your knees.
It will take you a looong time to ollie. It took me about 3-4 months to master the ollie then you can practice adding height. Hope this helps!
