My cat may have been hit by a car or attack by an animal.?

My cat was injured and was given Metacam injection. He is very lethargic but has gotten up to pee.He limped very badly but could walk a few steps at a time.He has also eaten a bit and I gave him a few drops of water with a syringe but he won't drink any more.

He has been given Meloxicam liquid to take for any pain for 5 days.

Does anyone know the side effects and what I should look for before taking him back to the vets.

Update:

To kinese93....he has a gash on one side of his body, not big maybe a 1/2 centimetre and it looked like he was wet on the other side which had dried. That is what makes me think something tried to eat him or "play" with him a little roughly.

He has finally curled up and closed his eyes but he was laying there just staring

his nose is pink still and they said his gums were still pink, his hear rate ok and his breathing was fine that was until he had the Metacam, then I noticed the drugged like state. He just lay in my arms and slept.

Do you know anything else about Metacam?

Thanks

Please do not give your cat Metacam! A lot of cats have died from this medication, it is deadly for cats! Take him to the emergency vet!

Trust me, I am the daughter of a vet and I have seen enough cats hit by cars and attacked by animals to last me a lifetime. If your cat was connected to either of these, he would be near dead and would NOT be eating, drinking, going to the bathroom or getting up. He would be in serious pain and huge bites covering him. Also, most of the time they don't escape from either alive. He's very lucky.

Something else is bothering him (unless it was a VERY small animal that attacked) and you should take him back to the vet or go to a different one.

Put him in a quiet restful spot and put litter box, canned and dry food and water right near him. Also, put a soft bed down with towels covering it and put a hot water bottle on the edge with a thick towel over.

    Good luck!!!!

Yes, I picked up a bit about Metacam from my mom.

If these side effects are noticed take the cat to a vet RIGHT AWAY:

    - stomach upset (squirming and rolling around - looks in discomfort)

    - vomiting

    - diarrhea (bloody sometimes)

    - drinking a lot of water (increased from normal)

    - lethargy

    - decreased appetite

    - he may get kidney or liver failure from this drug - you can spot this right away if he is off his food, lethargic or increased drinking

From what you've said you're cat is not getting better so you need to go back to the vet RIGHT NOW.

    You need to ask for:

    - Blood panel

    - Kidney functions/Liver functions (on the blood panel)

    - IV Fluids

    - Antibiotics

Stop the metacam before you check it out!!!! (I really mean it.) They aren't usually dopey, not drinking and not eating so something is definitely not right. Take him to the vet ASAP.

    Good luck!!!!

Oh btw, someone said that metacam is life threatening for cats and their right. Metacam isn't licensed for cats so this is an off-the-label thing going on. I would ask for another drug. Or a different vet. You don't want extra worries when you cat is ALREADY having a tough time with the bites.

I'm not trying to worry you at all but it could be antifreeze. He may have drank it and then lay down in it. Your vet would know best but if you gave him Metacam and it was antifreeze, that's a double death warrant. Just warning you.

i think you should take him to a vet or much better to a different vet to see if there is any other alternate solution for your cat. It's better to discuss this with the vet before it's too late for your cat.

I hope your cat gets better.
