Why don't men like Jane Austen?
It seems like 99% of people who love Jane Austen are women. My bf refuses to read any of the novels and is bored by the movies.
It's so incredibly witty and the relationships are so fascinating how could you not like it?

It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a man in possession of a good mind must be in want of a Jane Austen novel? ;-)
Actually not all men hate Austen. Because it deals primarily with romantic relationships and with female characters , guys initially find it a bit "odious" as Jane would say. But if you can get them to really begin to peal back some of the layers and look at the amazing dialogue and character development they tend to warm to it.
My husband has learned to appreciate Austen novels through my love of them. I'm not saying she has become his favorite author, but being a guy who enjoys observing people and their idiosyncrasies he has come to appreciate her work. It's taken some years though. As he has mellowed a bit with age the Transformer movies hold less charm for him while Jane has risen in his estimation. Maybe the same thing will happen for your bf in time.
After all, there's a reason she is still so popular after 200 years. Somehow I don't think the Transformers will fare so well 200 years from now.

Have you read The Jane Austen Book Club? It's about a group of people, including a sexy man, who get together once a month to discuss Jane Austen's books. It's a good book in its own right. I recommend it. And if, as a woman, it's okay for me to like Tom Clancy, or John Grissim (sp?), then why shouldn't you enjoy a female writer who writes about life? After all, there are men in those books, as well as women. Enjoy!

Lol at the irony of ''Little Miss Poopie Pants'' calling Jane Austen silly.
I love Pride & Prejudice! It's one of my favourites.
Sense & Sensibility and Mansfield Park were alright.
I'm a little way through Emma, and it seems pretty good.
However, in all her novels, the writing is fantastic. I love how they talk!
I don't know why men don't read Jane Austen. Actually... come to think of it... I'm sure lots of men don't like reading books from female points of views, whereas women read from both.
Interesting question.
I wonder if Harry Potter would have been so well-liked by both genders if it was Harriet Potter?

Because there is big difference between women and men when it comes to taste. Men don't usually like love stories. I remember when I was 11 and the Bridget Jones movie came out. All the girls loved it, but the boys sait was boring and all lovy dovy. I am not pretending to understand mens taste, but I think they like more action that to poeple in love who wants to escape together because their social differences don't allow them to be togehter. Men and Women are very differnt that way and they always have. Why do you think most people in the military (who wants to be there) are men, because they like more action than women do.

I think because they don't have the patience to understand the depths of her works. Because if you think about it Jane Austen was an extremely talented writer and every word she wrote had something MORE to say. You have to be inwardly, emotionally mature to understand them. And of course you have to be that type of person :) I personally love how she writes...Details every single cell of every character, and the environment...everything. Fantastic. :) And really deep.

Its not that I dislike Jane Austen. She is an amazing author, she happens to be my wifes favorite...but it is just not what interests me. I like John Grisham, Dan Brown, Stephen King and the like. I will admit they are not on her level but I am just not into books that are from the female character's perspective.

I don't really get this either. Austen is fantastic. Pride and Prejudice is just about my favorite novel ever.
If you want to give them something that makes Austen more guy-friendly, here you go:

Lack of emotional intelligence and understanding of the word subtlety.
My favourite is Northanger Abbey. I'm male.

I guess its considered chick lit, most of it is romance and guys usually steer clear of romance. They're missing out!
