If he is an AKC Champion showdog, the price of a puppy or for pick-of-the-litter. If he is an AKC non-champion showdog, get his championship before you start breeding.

Obviously you want to wait until he is 2 years old and perform genetic testing on him.

If he is just some AKC dog with no qualifications that you got from Mr. and Mrs. Smith down the street when their AKC female had puppies, get him neutered. AKC does NOT mean good genes. There are physical defects and personality issues running rampant in the cocker spaniel population. Lady and the Tramp led to poor overbreeding in the 80's, and the breed has been trying to recover ever since.

Have his hips and elbows been OFA'ed or PenHip tested? Have his eyes been CERF tested? Are there other genetic tests that need to be passed? What about Brucellosis testing? Has is attained a conformation title and working titles?

If the answer to any of these questions is no then your Cocker Spaniel either needs to have all of this done or needs to be neutered there are enough poorly bred dogs being killed everyday in shelters.

There are tons of purebred animals.

If you browse the pet section you will find reasons nearly daily why your animal should likely be kept out of a breeding program.

The fact that you needed to ask is enough reason not to breed.

It is between $50 and $200 to neuter him. Unless of course your dog is a champion and health cleared, in this case, go talk to your vet and breed mentor.

Get him neutered about $40 to $60.

Unless he has a CH title, and has passed all health clearances thru OFA, CERF, BAER, and Optigen, as well as a brucellosis test.. he is not a stud dog.

Get him neutered. No one with a decent female will touch your dog.

If you dog was that special...people would be knocking your door down looking to breed their bitches....

if you have to ask on Y/A....get your cocker neutered

the guideline is the value of one pup - so if he won westminster lots if "purebred" is all he got to say for himself - they give them to the pound just to get rid of them...
