Is this when you know you've been duped?
When you support the right of your health insurance company to:
1. Dump you when you find out you need open heart surgery
2. Raise your rates when you get sick
3. Refuse to insure you because you already have cancer
4. Let you die to increase their profit margin
Under socialized medicine clinics and hospitals would be owned and operated by the government. Doctors and nurses would be employees of and paid by the government. This means that while your response is snide and typical of the duped it is has nothing to do with the real world.

Michael, as a community organizer just getting in after a hard day of drumming up support for health insurance reform, I can only agree with you.
Oh wait; I already knew this--I certified for insurance underwriting to build the first electronic transactions for healthcare in 1994. Yep, health plan providers are profiteering off you and me. That means that they are not using any kind of business model at all; it is a straightforward pain and suffering ripoff.
Used to be that health insurers were adept at two things: 1) transferring funds from those healthy and rich enough to pay to those sick and too poor to pay much and 2) investing in stable instruments intelligently enough to eke out a good ROI so that they could build effective reserves. But then they joined the money markets ordinarily used by businesses engaged in commodities. Except that humans are NOT commodities . . .
It's their own fault. If they'd stayed in the traditional mode, everything would be just fine. As it currently stands, they deserve to be completely disintermediated, as of yesterday, imo.
