Film school portfolio?

I plan on going into storyboarding/animation. Is it encouraged/frowned upon to include fan art of a famous cartoon character in your portfolio? (i.e. superheroes, something from Disney, etc)

    I wouldn't suggest it.

Not that it isn't a possibility to achieve, but two things happen with this.

    1. The portfolio reviewer has seen it all before..therefore, you are more than likely presenting them with something that they are going to feel mentally bored with. It'd be the equivalent of me trying to submit my short film to the sundance festival about ninjas, if everyone is submitting ninja films. It doesn't mean it isn't good, it's just that everyone else is doing it too. They want to see originality as much as possible.

    2. Your art will be compared to the source art. I.E. if you're drawing Mickey Mouse, and he isn't proportioned well...it is instantly noticeable. If you're doing an original character, though, these flaws become hidden.

My suggestion. Stay away from stereotypes, unless they're AMAZINGLY good. Don't do Manga, Superheroes (Unless they're original), or cartoon characters (Unless they're original), or any other generic character type. Also, ensure that you have LIFE DRAWING in your portfolio. It's far more impressive than any superhero.
