XP safe mode help!!!!?

I want to keep my laptop in safe mode for a day, as I am de-archiving some .arc archives, which are going to take a long time and can't be done in normal mode.

The problem is that the display is on all the time. Even if I configure the display to turnoff after 5 minutes, it stays on. Is there any trick to make it work in safe mode?

I don't want to keep the display running all day long, this may damage it.

LCD screens don't get what CRT screens used to get.It is called Persistence. The phosphor would degrade form having the same image for along time and that image became permanently burned on the screen.Don't worry about it.LCD screens don't do that.

Many functions do not work in safe mode, but try the Fn and arrow keys or function keys to dim the screen or turn it off.

Go to control panel, power options and click on the advanced tab. Change the setting of "when i close my computer" to nothing. Then simply close your computer once the de-archiving has started.
