Where in the Bible does it state that life begins at conception?

As a Christian, I've heard many other Christians state that life begins at conception, and thus abortion is morally wrong. However, I don't recall reading that anywhere in the Bible; can anyone point me to the relevant passage? I don't understand how this can be clear from the Bible when the writers didn't even know what "conception" is, nor did they know about sperm, eggs, or any of the other biological details of pregnancy.

Scientifically speaking abortion is the taking of an innocent human life, which is murder.

How can I say this? If you do a tissue sample of the fetus you will find that the fetus is human (DNA, ect.) You can observe the cells multiplying. Life. Human life.

Now that we have proved that abortion is murder from a scietific viewpoint, what does the Bible say?

The Bible says the fetus is a baby, a human life, and that God knows the baby in the womb of the mother.

    Psa 139

1 O lord, thou hast searched me, and known me.

2 Thou knowest my downsitting and mine uprising, thou understandest my thought afar off.

3 Thou compassest my path and my lying down, and art acquainted with all my ways.

4 For there is not a word in my tongue, but, lo, O LORD, thou knowest it altogether.

5 Thou hast beset me behind and before, and laid thine hand upon me.

6 Such knowledge is too wonderful for me; it is high, I cannot attain unto it.

7 Whither shall I go from thy spirit? or whither shall I flee from thy presence?

8 If I ascend up into heaven, thou art there: if I make my bed in hell, behold, thou art there.

    9 If I take the wings of the morning, and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea;

10 Even there shall thy hand lead me, and thy right hand shall hold me.

11 If I say, Surely the darkness shall cover me; even the night shall be light about me.

12 Yea, the darkness hideth not from thee; but the night shineth as the day: the darkness and the light are both alike to thee.

13 For thou hast possessed my reins: thou hast covered me in my mother's womb.

Job 10:18 Wherefore then hast thou brought me forth out of the womb? Oh that I had given up the ghost, and no eye had seen me!

Judges 13:1-7. In essence we see that Manoah's wife is told not to drink wine or strong drink because the child she was carrying in her womb was a Nazarite. The law applied to the unborn child in this case. The unborn child obviously is alive or it would not be required to keep the law.

Luke 1:44, "For lo, as soon as the voice of thy salutation sounded in mine ears, the babe leaped in my womb for joy." This is Elizabeth speaking under the inspiration of the Holy Ghost and gives a human attribute to the child in her womb, John the Baptist

This is the same word (brephos) Luke uses in Luke 2:12,16 "Ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger." Luke 18:15,16 meaning infants and 1 Peter 2:2 "newborn babes."

Genesis 35:16-26. This passage deals with Jacob and his wives going to Ephrath from Bethel after they had left Padanaram. The statement in verse 26 says they were all born in Padanaram. But if you will notice one of them was obviously born after they left and were

between Ephrath and Bethel, that one was- Benjamin. Why would the writer of Genesis makesuch an bvious "mistake"? If the time element is looked into, you can see that Benjamin

was conceived in Padanaram but literally born in the promised land. This shows what God thinks of the place to start counting a life.

Genesis 25:22-26 and Hosea 12:3. These verses show that the struggling in the womb was not just two "appendages" bumping into each other.

Second Samuel 11:5. This verse, along with countless others, Says she was "with child" not with "appendage

The apostle Paul was separated for God while in the womb of his mother.

Gal 1:15 But when it pleased God, who separated me from my mother's womb, and called me by his grace,

Proverbs 6:16-17"The Lord hates hands that shed innocent blood."

Children are a blessing from God, not a curse.

Genesis 25:21"And Isaac intreated the Lord for his wife, because she was barren: and the Lord was intreated of him, and Rebecca his wife conceived."

Genesis 33:5"The children which God has graciously given me."

Psalm 127:3 "Lo, children are an heritage of the Lord: and the fruit of the womb is His reward."

This society has an improper attitude towards children ,sacrificing them to the god of convenience.

2 Kings 17:16-20"And they forsook all the commandments of the Lord their God.... And they burned their sons and daughters as offerings....Therefore the Lord was very angry with Israel and removed them out of His sight."

    I can see some of the confusion that EddieJ has given the passages he used. You cannot really use any of these passages to disprove life at conception though. MOST of these passages are referencing beings who were not in a woman's womb. Adam was formed before humans were even able to be conceived and was made of the dust. Then in Ezekiel the bible references the Lord bringing life to those who were dead. Again not referencing new life coming from a mother. And in the other passages talking about ending life, that is not talking about the beginning of life but the end of it. It ends without breath but none of those verses state that it begins at the first breath taken AFTER "birth." And I also feel that the reference in Exodus could really be interpreted two ways. The way EddieJ has done OR if you read the verse it says "22If men fight, and hurt a woman with child, so that she gives birth prematurely, yet no harm follows..." That makes me think that if she delivers the child and the child survives then he with just pay for the trauma but later the chapter says "23 But if any harm follows, then you shall give life for life, 24 eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, foot for foot, 25 burn for burn, wound for wound, stripe for stripe." So I would consider that to mean the man could be executed for killing the child within the mothers womb. But Psalms 139:13 says "For You formed my inward parts;

You covered me in my mother’s womb." Now in this verse the writer says MY and ME, not the thing that later became me. No matter where you stand on the matter, you will never find the exact words, "abortion is not ok" nor will you find the exact words "abortion is ok." I personally, would rather ere on the side of living until proven not. What happens if I am wrong? A few more babies are born! But if you ere the other way what happens? A lot of murders that we as sinners will be held accountable for.... I don't want that on my conscience.

You are right in saying that no where in the Bible does it say that life begins at conception. So we need to be reasonable and view what the Bible says about life.

First, remember that God is the only one with the right to judge and that, as Romans14:12 says, we will all render an account with God. Therefore we need to use our Bible trained thinking ability to see what he is trying to tell us.

Psalms 139:13-16 shows that from the time that we are in our mothers belly He could see us and our potential as people. And that He loved us.

Next, at Exodus 21:22, 23 God sets out what happens to someone that causes a mother to loose her unborn child. There is no mention of fetal age. It was concidered murder. Some like to say that this scripture is only talking about the mother. But that is not what it says. It says a fatal accident. Either mother or child.

In Both these examples, there is no mention of a fetal age. We must come to the conclusion that the unborn child, no matter its age is precious to God.

10 to 20% of all KNOWN pregnancies end in miscarriage. 30 to 50% of fertilized eggs are lost before or during the process of implantation. If human life begins at the moment of conception than who would be responsible for these massive human losses? Why are we not holding funeral services for all of these lost humans? The reason is simple, they were not alive. Having human DNA does not make you a living breathing human, does not make you a live. If that is your logic than someone who has just died is also "alive". There are still human cells that are dividing with his genetic code in them. Let's take this even a step further. What of someone who is officially brain dead, no brain function what so ever, but their heart is kept pumping and their lungs are being filled by a machine. If you pull the plug they will die on those machines this person will die. They have human cells filled with their DNA that is dividing but this person is not alive. Why is this different for a fetus? Especially when you consider that (insert nature, God, Jehovah, etc here) takes so many fertilized eggs, many of which we do not know about. I'm sorry, but using the DNA argument for your "science" is absolutely ridiculous.

You actually don't need the Bible to tell you this, it's a scientific fact.

This is what we know about the human fetus:

    1) It's DNA is complete and unique human DNA.

    2) Unless it "dies" either naturally or unnaturally, it will grow and develop into what we recognize as a baby.

Likewise, a child will develop into an adult unless it's life it cut short.

    3) The DNA of the baby will be identical to that of the fetus, which means it's the same being in a different stage of life.

    4) The fetus is definitely NOT part of the mother's body, as it's DNA is distinctly different (although related to her and the father) from the DNA of the cells of her body, which all contain her unique DNA.

    5) The only other things in the known universe that have complete and unique human DNA are....human beings.

If you allow yourself to think about it objectively, the fact that life begins at conception is so obvious. The only reason we wonder about it is because we want abortion to be okay. Abortion can provide a quick and dirty way out of a scary situation for a young pregnant girl and the guy that impregnated her that doesn't want to take responsibility for his actions. But that doesn't make it ok.

Do the right thing. It may be scary, but you'll be glad you made the right decision in the long run. Your life may not be neat and tidy as you would plan it, but you will probably end up with a beautiful mess of blessings.

As a Christian, you should learn to trust God to give you the courage to do what is right and pleasing to Him. "Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding: in all your ways acknowledge Him and He shall direct your paths. Do not be wise in your own eyes; Fear [respect] the Lord and depart from evil. It will be health to your flesh, and strength to your bones." Proverbs 3: 5-8

Peace and blessings to you. ;)

There is no passage that states when life begins (and I love the creative interpretations people are making on quotes verses!) and for most of history the Church has NOT been categorically against abortions. IN the 16th century, for example, the Church considered a fetus to be a person when the mother could feel it move (about 5 months into gestation). They were against abortion after that point, but not before.

Does not say that life begins at conception, but it does say " thou shall not kill" Abortion is murder, somewhere else in the old testament, God deals very harshly with a man who causes a pregnant women to lose her baby, not sure where it is,can find it if you want.

Abortion can cause women to have Mental problems in later life, many women i know who have done this now have mental problems.

I think there's some Psalm about it, I'm sure someone will post the entire chapter or something.

Anyhoo, the Bible also has God helping make a potion to induce an abortion, in Numbers 5.

There are a couple of passages that refer to God "know[ing] you before ou were formed", but these are references to specific individuals. It could easily be interpreted as saying God deliberately fostered their conception, but leaves all else up to the nature he created.

Genesis 2:7 -Life begins with the first breath.

Exodus 21:22 - abortion is not the same as murder
