The rhesus factor is actually a protein that may or may not be inserted on the membrane of red blood cells. Positive is dominant. A person who is ++, or a person who is +- would both produce the protein.
How could a Rhesus negative child be the offspring of two Rhesus positive parents? If both the husband and wife are heterozygous (have one chromosome + and the other -), they have a 25% chance of producing a child who is Rh-.

If two parents are each heterozygous for the Rh antigen allele
(Rh+Rh-), there is a 25% chance of producing an Rh- child.
