Is Ubuntu better than Windows yet?

Dont get me wrong, I'm not exactly satisfied with Vista (havent tried W7 yet) but I was certainly disappointed in Ubuntu 9.4 compared to the hype of it's proponents.

Personal opinions are greatly appreciated.

Depends on what you're looking for. In terms of compatibility, Microsoft anything is superior, but it also comes with a host of bugs and other BS. If you're not running anything too crazy and just a casual computer user, anything Linux provides a safe and easy to run your PC...the only difference being installation being a *****.

    Define "better than Windows".

In terms of stability and security, Linux has always beaten Windows. Big time.

In terms of hardware compatibility, Linux is getting there, but it's still not quite ready. Wi-Fi cards are getting better support for Linux but Broadcom is being a pain about supporting Linux drivers and there's only so much the community can do without the manufacturer's supoort

As far as software compaitibilty, Windows wins. Most developers don't see a point in writing a Linux version when 90% of the world's computers run Windows. It's a catch 22- Linux won't get the people until it gets the software, but it won't get the software until it gets the people. There is the Wine project which is working on getting Windows programs running on Unix systems and they are making pretty good progress, but they're of course still playing catch-up to Microsoft.

while linux still has a long way to go the catch up with windows on the multimedia and plug and pray front, ubuntu isn't the only linux distribution out there. imho, it's only for beginners.

    my favorites?

opensuse has the best autodetection and plug and play driver support

mandriva and pclinuxos have one of the best multimedia capabilities out of the box and come in handy for windows dual booters

gentoo and sabayon are the most advanced and bleeding edge but they're not for the faint hearted.

I wanted to switch to Linux OS for the last 2 years but unfortunately there is no formidable alternative to windows xp.

I tried ubuntu 8.04 because of it's long term support.and there is no incentive for me except the performance benefit of amd64.

Right now Windows Xp is still the best OS.

I tried OpenSUSE, KDE AND GNOME. Ubuntu 8.04 amd64,

If you don't care much about programs and just a firefox browser does it for you.

I recommed trying Opensuse KDE 11.1 or 11.2 which is coming out soon.

I really liked the new KDE interface. It is very similar to Mac OS X.

But if you like to Use different web browsers like chrome. Windows XP is still the best choice.

    Vista is Piece of &&&&&&.

I don't understand how stupid Vista makers can be. Its like your computer uses most of its resources just to run the damn OS.

Yes, I use it every day. Package management is something Windows just doesn't have. Linux is secure. The operating system treats you respectively (not like a criminal) and the whole system is customizable and open.

We'll find out when 9.10 comes out in 6 days. I think it's already better than Windows, especially Vista. Windows 7 is VERY good, though.
