They're automatic, there's a switch in the center console that operates it. They are extremely complicated, and if there's a problem you won't be able to get it closed again. Sometimes they get stuck halfway open.
There's a fluid reservoir in the bottom of the trunk that needs to be full before it will work right, and the fluid is crazy expensive.
