what happens to "lost" mutual funds?

I bought a fund several years ago, since then ive lost most of the paperwork, ive moved several times and mail cant be forwarded or sent to most of those addresses, and the mutual fund itself has changed companies/names. Am I out of luck? I have the original name of the fund, I think, and tried to call a number on it and look it up online and had no luck at all.

It may end up in the Unclaimed Property in the state treasury department. Most states have online databases you can search by your name for free.

Some funds have gone defunct - my dad had a couple that went under and he lost his whole investment in them.

You might try asking someone in the business to research the issue and see what came of them, and should definitely try to reach the brokerage where you held your account - if you don't have this you might try looking back at prior year's tax returns to see if they reported gains to the IRS - the contact info will be there if they did.

I sourced you to a site run by a long time trader - you might use his contact info at the link below and ask him to research it - he is very gracious about helping people, has an extensive knowledge of the industry, and is an excellent researcher to boot. Can't promise anything, but he is definitely one I would turn to for help finding an answer.
