New England Road Trip in January?

My husband and I are planning a trip to New England area in January. We are looking at flying into Boston and back home from NYC. We are planning to visit Boston/Cambridge, Providence, Mystic, Bridgeport, and NYC. We've been to NYC a lot so we don't really need help with that but how long should we spend in each of the other places? Where should we stay? What should we see? Where should we eat? Any other places on that route that we should stop and see? If you have any answers to any of these questions that would be great. Thanks!

Update:

The reason we are thinking about Jan is because we would maybe like to move to Mass. Boston area and have been told the reason not too is the winter. So, we could see how it is in Jan. the dead of winter before we start really thinking about a move.

Bridgeport? There's nothing in Bridgeport except maybe the Barnum Museum. Stay there a couple of hours, max, on the way to somewhere else. Don't spend the night and keep your car doors locked at all times.

Winter is when NE bundles up and stays inside. Neither Plimoth Plantation nor the Adams Homestead are open, there's no duck tours in Boston. On the other hand, tourists are few and far between. It's the ONLY time of year to eat at Durgin Park.

Providence has the wonderful RISD Art Museum, the State Capitol Building, and not much else in the winter.

Mystic Seaport is fun if you are bundled up (the craft people are working, but not much outside), but they aren't open the whole week. (Thurs-Sun only). The Mystic Aquarium is wonderful. I like the Steamboat Inn, get a room with a fireplace. The casinos are also quite close to there. One of them has a nice Native American museum.

Boston/Cambridge are multiple days. Tons of museums and the Freedom Trail. There's also an historic pub tour on Tuesdays. Hogwarts is at the Science Museum. http://www.trustedtours.com/store/UseDateA.aspx?SI...

You might want to reschedule that road trip of your to say, July.

New England is NOT the place to be in January. I cannot stress this enough. The weather can get very cold and the region is prone to crippling storms. Besides, if you are not familiar with winter driving, the roads can be hazardous long after the storm.

Skip Bridgeport, the place is a crime ridden cesspool.

Providence is nice, but not a lot there. There is the Roger Williams Zoo and a nice mall, but that is about it. There are some nice restaurants in Atwells St Providence. There is more to do in Newport, but that place shuts down from September to May. The Mansions and the Touro Synogogue (run by the Park Service) should be open in the off season.

Never been to Mystic, they have an Aquarium there, but I'm betting like, most seaside resorts much of the town will be shut down for the winter

    Things to do in Boston:

Museums, lots of Museums: The MFA (art) Isabella Stuart Gardner (art) ICA (art) The Aquarium, The Science Museum, Harvard and MIT museums, not to mention all the Historical sites; sites along the Freedom Trail, John Adams House

Check listings for concerts, plays and other events

Visit the Harbor Islands, Whale watch, Blue Hills State reservation (but never in the winter)

shopping, lots of shopping in Quincy Market, Newbury Street or Harvard Square in Cambridge, also visit the insanely overpriced Copley Place Mall

    Duck tours

Go to the top of the Prudential Tower for a great view

If you are coming from NYC, why fly? Why not just drive because you will need to rent a car anyway. I personally would not even bother stopping in Bridgeport, and if you do, keep everything locked up, and I really do not think I would stay overnight there. (Sorry Bridgeport) There is a ton of stuff to do in Boston/Cambridge, but a lot of the touristy summery things are not operating, and flowers are not blooming. Mystic Seaport is really nice. Why not try Newport if you are also going to Providence? Make sure you go to Faneuil Hall in Boston - a fun days worth of shopping and eating. You should be able to find some reasonable hotels, especially in Newport and Mystic because it is off season. Have a great trip.

Just want to advise you that, whatever you decide to visit in the area, make allowance for weather related problems, including flying but especially if you plan on traveling via car. January-February are the usually absolute worst months weatherwise in this area and spending the night in a car in a snowdrift on I-95 just isn't my idea of a fun vacation. So make sure you have a "plan B" (like; order room service, relax in the jacuzzi with a glass of wine and watch it come down outside from the comfort of your hotel room) if there should be a day when travel via road is contraindicated.

Added 10/26 1928Edt - If you're coming in mid to late January, that is normally the coldest time of year. Be prepared for windchills as cold as -28° to -31°C/-20° to -25°F (probably colder where the wind is funneled through urban "canyons").

Most of the things worth seeing in Providence, Mystic, Bridgeport, etc are only worth seeing when you can be out and about.

Since winter is cold, you will be mostly inside, I would say focus your time staying in Boston, and do indoor activities like

Sports (Celtics games will be going on at TD Banknorth)

Dining of course, hundreds of options if you stay in Boston

The Aquarium, theater, museums, etc. I could go on, but the point is being in Boston in the winter will offer you loads of indoor based entertainment for January, so focus your time there.

merely like a Zionist, to accuse this remarkably sane lady, of psychological instability for her indignant writing interior the airplane. I heard Hedy Epstein talk, and what the Israelis did this elderly holocaust refugee on leaving Israel is unspeakable. because of the fact it replaced into her tale, I won't repeat it, yet i visit assert that expressing her anger by writing on the airplane magazine confirmed great self-self-discipline. i'm sorry she misplaced her mothers and fathers interior the holocaust. this is a great tragedy. you will no longer hear that from the Zionists - yet then, possibly people who accuse Hedy Epstein of "boiler plate" propaganda, implying that she did no longer have particular stories or make her very own observations approximately Israeli activities, are with that Zionist branch who tried to make an alliance with the Nazis and Italian fascists against the British in the time of WWII (Yitzhak Shamir, founding member of the Likud celebration, and his cronies).
