how do i know that i have a dvd drive?

The easiest way to find out would be to put a DVD in the drive and see if it works. If you only have a CD drive, the DVD simply will not play, but no harm will be done to your computer. If you're looking for a technical answer, go to Control Panel and Device Manager. Under Device Manager, click the plus (+) button next to "DVD/CD ROM Drives." If the device listed under that has DVD or DVD RW or anything with DVD in it, you can be reasonably sure that you have a DVD drive.
(Note: the above answer is for a PC user. If you have a Mac, I would only know to insert a DVD into the drive and see if it plays or shows up on your desktop.)
