Australian cancer treatment options?

I'm looking for any sort of info on cancer treatment in Australia, especially in Queensland, and particularly lung cancer but any answers will do!

I would like to hear about any great oncologists. Also wondering what happens here if you don't have private health cover? Is it still possible to choose and pay for your own private specialists, and how much does that sort of thing cost?

Also wondering if there is an Australian support or social group where you can discuss cancer? I have only been able to find US ones so far.

thanks

Update:

Hi Spreedog thanks for taking the time to answer my question again, and in answer to yours we don't quite know yet. My mum, a heavy smoker for years, started coughing up blood. A lung x-ray showed something that he said would probably be cancer. So she was sent to an oncologist who said in his opinion it was probably nothing to be worried about, he thought scar tissue, but sent her for a biopsy to be sure. The results of that were 'behaves like small cell cancer.' The oncologist is now saying he is confused because it has only grown 1mm in 3 months and she has lost no weight. no symptoms at all really, so now they don't know what to do and we are all getting very impatient, but dont know what to do to hurry this along.

"Tarkarri" would know if she sees this question.

For lung cancer it does not matter whether you have a "great" oncologist or not - unless this is a small cell lung cancer.

The best thing to have is a good surgeon - depending on the stage and the type of lung cancer.

Is this non-small cell lung carcinoma or small cell lung carcinoma?
