Calling Dalmatian owners! Do you have cats?

Will my Dal cope with having a cat added to the household?

She is 6 years old, spayed, an only dog at the moment, as laid back as a Dal ever is ;). She does tend to chase cats when we are exercising her around the neighburhood...

We would like to adopt a kitten, but don't want open warfare/cat chasing for the rest of their lives !

Update:

Update: we have since been advised to do a 'cat test'

Find a friend with a cat

Have the dog on a leash

At neutral territory

See what the dog's reaction is...

So that is the next step. Can't imagine she will manage to ignore the cat, but we will see :)

Thanks for all the help so far!

If the dog already chases cats it might not be a good idea.

But in my opinion it all depends on the dog and the cat

But in my experience growing up I had 3 friends with Dals (the best dogs in the world they were) and 2 of my friends had cats in the house no problem. My other friend had a cat for about a month but the Dal never left it alone and the cat was a nervous wreck. Needless to say the cat went to live with her grandmother.

I run into the same situation because I have a Terrier mix but with her it all depends on the cat. A more skittish/shy cat she will chase and try to hunt. A more lazy/sociable cat she acts very nicely around. And your average in between cat, she just ignores completely.

Currently we don't have a cat but would like one in the future

  • I had a cat with my Dalmatians, but it was hard. When they were inside, she would stay outside to avoid them and vice versa.

Domino was fine with Dewie ... until she decided to run away from him. Then his prey drive would kick in and he would chase her as she ran for her cat flap. We she didn't run away from him, Domino would lick and groom her, although he was a but rough! She unfortunately died a couple of months ago (NOT because of my dogs).

If your Dallie already chases cats now, I don't think adding a kitten to your home would be such a good idea, unless you could be absolutely sure you could keep them separated at all times.

She cried somewhat yet there replace into no way i replace into going to this irresponsible lady look after yet another being. Years later, I permit the cat bypass out and have somewhat relaxing cat time, next difficulty i comprehend he's have been given like 7 cat skanks laying off throughout my ******* living house. So threw him interior the unused basement. Forgot approximately him for the reason that, properly till immediately... Oh yet that alter into like 8 years in the past. i don't stay there anymore..

If she chases them, I wouldn't risk it!

    Our Dallie killed our kitten.
