Why does Mike Komisarek make 4.5 million per year?

Seriously, what do they pay him for? After 8 games, all he has to his name is 23 penalty minutes and a minus 4.

I'm a die hard Habs fan, but when they named him to the all-star team last year, I almost punched my cat... and I don't even have a cat. I considered finding a stray just to bring home and knock around.

All last year I kept saying to myself "this man is a gigantic waste of oxygen". We brought in Hal Gill to waste that oxygen in his place, but Hal Gill isn't going to make 22.5 million dollars in 5 years. Over and over again people told me I was crazy, and they still continue to believe that he's one of the best D-men in the NHL.

I promise you I'm not just hating him because he defected to the enemy. I've hated him ever since I saw his big stupid face fumbling around with the puck. How can a penalty magnet with mediocre defensive skill and ZERO playmaking ability be so rich?

Update:

Bob: I think that's exactly the problem. Everyone looks at his stats and not his play as a whole. The only reason he was a + player last years is because he had Andrei Markov (a REAL top 10 D-man) to back him up, while he himself made some bonehead plays that cost us some goals.

His ability to hit is often his downfall. He gets so worried about making a hit that he forgets to play the puck. I can't count the number of times I've seen him turn the puck over in his own end. If you ask me, he's nothing but a liability.

It seems as if a culture emerged with the salary cap in the NHL. If you are in a bigger market, you have to sign a "big name" free agent every time you have cap room. Since there are not always truly "big name" players available, the next tier of players see their salaries rise and get called "major acquisitions". If Dion Phaneuf or Zdeno Chara or Niklas Lidstrom had been available last year, the big market teams (ie: the Leafs) would have been after them. Since none of them were on the market, teams looked to what was left and designated them as "elite" players. For that reason, Mike Komisarek became a 4.5 million dollar player. He isn't worth that kind of money - just like Drury, Gomez, Briere and others weren't worth the money they received with their last free agent contracts. He was just one of the more notable names in a class of lesser free agents.

He is among the top 10 NHL defencemen and his team leader in HITS. He has good upside as a Dman entering his prime (27).

Bobby Orr could play for this squad and end up a - player at the end of the year so throw that stat out the window and he was a + player with Montreal.

Also, no he is not exactly a PP specialist with offensive skill but you need stay at home guys too.

All of that said, it is a bit on the high side as far as salary.

EDIT- True....and you hear the same knock on Phaneuf but he has the offence too....didn't Souray play with Markov a couple of years ago and what did that do for his plus/minus (maybe it was just on the PP?!) Markov was a - last year....I don't know, I do like Komisaerek's heart...maybe not at 4.5MM though.
