Does Sheldon from The Big Bang Theory have some form of autism?
This sounds really wierd, but I have been thinking about this for a while...It seems to me that Sheldon has many symptoms of autism. He is very smart, doesn't quite understand social stuff, is very very rigid in routine, seems to have some little OCD type behaviors, etc. Personally, I would say he probably has Aspergers or PDD...
any opinions on this?
I read those articles for the first time after you said that...I cannot believe I had not actually heard it before.
I have a son with a formal dx of PDD-NOS, but I personally think he is 50% PDD and 50% Aspie. I cannot help but see some of my son in Sheldon, and that is why I asked. It warms my heart to see that the media has finally done a very accurate ( in my opinion) portrayal of how a person with autism can come across as just "quirky".

Yes, and you hit the nail on the head. Here is a subtitle from an article about the show: "Is the world ready for an Asperger's sitcom?"

I personally think they just created a stereotype of a geek and exaggerated his quirkiness for laughs. I think if he did have Asperger's it would change the show. Rather than having an air of superiority to his odd behavior, he would simply be someone who couldn't socialize typically. I think that by making him just quirky and weird makes him so full of himself and his intelligence that he can't conceive of a world where people don't think as he does or behave as he does. If they did make Sheldon have Asperger's, his inability to understand his faux pas would be limited, and so would the comedy of the show. I think his shock and consternation is the funniest part.
I did read the article posted above and I still like my theory better. I think the best part of Sheldon is the "this is how I am" attitude surrounding his quirks, which would be altered for the worse if instead it were "this is how my autism spectrum disorder forces me to be." It just wouldn't be funny.

I know for a fact he has autism. He is so obsessive and compulsive, but just like Rain Man, he is highly smart. But it doesn't make him crazy, his mom had him tested.
