On an External HDD to back up everything. You can also make a System backup in case of System failure.

Try not to use the same hard drive for crucial backup. Because if that drive failed, or if the laptop got nicked, you've had it. Buy an external drive if you can and backup to it as well as onto other media e.g. DVDs if your data is extremely important. Always keep the backup safe.

I use SolarSys disc shadow which copies changed files to a Buffalo network drive at 1 hourly intervals.
This is completely automatic so I do not have to remember to do anything, especially look after removable media.

I would say it boils down to two options:
1) Use a partition on your hard-disk:
This is not too complex but isn't secure. for example if your p.c. got a virus it could spread to the partition.
2) DVD's
These are the best way as they are external (just don't scratch them)
