By "gay icon" I'm thinking... who do the drag queens love to dress up as the most.
For my money it's Tina Turner.
But I wouldn't be too surprised to be seeing some Lady Gaga in the Castro District this Halloween ;-)

Hi Jimmy.
Typoes happen. No worries. I know what you mean though. When it's in the question itself and there is no edit to fix it it's frustrating as hell.
Anyways. All in all I think Neil Patrick Harris is great. I know he's not a musician (though from what I understand he is quite the singer and has done musicals). Morrissey comes to mind as well when taken into the context where the person doesn't necessarily have to be gay to fit the mold, but more as an identifier (someone like Cher who is straight, but has become an icon). I seem to remember when I was younger and had my finger more on the pulse of things that he was the sort of post punk version of someone with that status.
Maybe I can do better... Let me think. This is an interesting question.

Alaska... a Spanish pop artist, she's been around since the 80's and has been embraced by pretty much everyone over the years... and especially by the gay community here in Madrid... she's always very vocal with gay rights, her music is a staple in the gay clubs and she's always at the head of the Gay Pride marches/celebrations that are held wildly every year here... she's very cool :)
here's an old clip with Dinarama... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=paccyHqIAoo

Isn't it scary, I actually listen to the music for the music and could care less what the artist does, says, or believes. O_O So I couldn't tell you which songs of mine were done by artheists... What is an artheist? *smart aleck grin*
